Acronis Mirgrate Easy Does not list primary HDD as source disk

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I want to clone the OS on my primary HDD to a newly purchased SSD. I am using Windows 8 64bits on a Thinkpad X230. The SSD is connected to the laptop using SATA to USB cable. The SSD is formatted to NTFS. The old HDD is 500GB that has one primary partition and a hidden backup partition. The SSD is 256GB.

After I launch the Migrate easy software, in the cloning wizard, my old HDD is not listed when asking to select "your source (old) hard drive", only my SSD is listed. However, it is shown in the next step when asking for "you destination hard drive".

Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have the same problem. When I select the option to add a drive, I see the old drive, but the old drive format is listed as Guid partition table and the color is gray, meaning that this format is unsupported. My computer is a brand new gateway running windows 8. When I go to the disk clone option and select manual, the old drive cannot be seen. If I select automatic, I get the following error message:

Acronis Migrate Easy failed to move your data because your new hard drive does not have enough free space to complete the operation. The reasons follow.

1. Some of your partitions contain errors. We recommend you reboot your operating system and correct these errors. For example, start the Check Disk utility if you use Windows.

2. Your new hard disk is much smaller than the old one. Make sure you've selected the correct old hard disk. If you have chosen the "As Is" option on the previous page, go back and try to select another option.

I don't buy this explanation since I have a brand new computer.

Migrate Easy hasn't been updated for quite some time (to my knowledge). What might work in both your situations is to perform a reverse clone, that is the old disk is removed and put into the external caddy and the new disk inserted into the PC/Laptop. Naturally this means booting from the recovery CD not from within Windows.

A brand new computer with Windows 8 pre installed by a computer manufacturer may well have a further complication - these will have Secure Boot enabled and will probably be UEFI BIOS running a GPT disk - to solve this problem enter the BIOS and disable the Secure Boot and change the UEFI/GPT to Legacy, this should make all the disks available to Linux the recovery environment of Migrate Easy. Once the clone has taken place make sure that the external drive is disconnected and for the W8 system Secure Boot and UEFI are re-enabled.
