Can Disk Directory copy boot drives?

Thread needs solution

Hi!

I am looking for a standalone utility to clone a bootable drive that contains Windows, GRUB partition (bootable through Windows BCD via a partition boot block stored in the BCD) and a number of Linux partitions.

I have Disk Director 12, but last time I used it for cloning system drive it produced an unbootable disk and I ended up having to use Windows Recovery CD to rebuild Windows bootstrap, and then had to rebuild GRUB from scratch using Linux CD -- the hoops I do not want to jump through again.

I suspect it happened probably perhaps because Disk Director 12 does not retain file positions within the partition when cloning, so MBR and PBRs ended up messed up.

I am wondering if this is still the case with Disk Director 12.5.

Sergey, ADD 12.5 does not support any EXT4 Linux file system partitions so is unlikely to be of help to you if your computer uses this common format.

I would recommend considering using Acronis True Image 2020 for cloning your dual-boot system where there is support for EXT4 partitions, or else use a dedicated tool such as CloneZilla.

Note: ATI 2020 is primarily aimed at Windows users so the documentation doesn't cover any operations related to Linux systems, but it does work well in such scenarios and I have used it myself to backup & recover my own Ubuntu partitions on a Windows dual-boot laptop, as well as using the Acronis rescue media on dedicated Ubuntu computers.
