External Harddrive is not recognized (Acronis True Image for Western Digital

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to use a newly purchased Western Digital My Passport SSD 2TB external hard drive (Model WDBAGF0020BBL) to backup a notebook computer (OS is Windows 11). Western Digital doesn't provide its own backup software any more, but recommends instead using Acronis True Image. Installation of 'Acronis True Image for Western Digital' worked, and selecting the source for creating a backup (the 'entire computer') also didn't pose problems, but the external hard drive is not shown under 'select destination' in Acronis True Image. Steps such as Re-installing Acronis True Image, selecting different folders as source for backup, checking settings of the hard drive and the software etc. as suggested in various posts related to similar problems have not led to a solution. Any hints as to what might cause the problem would be much appreciated.

Hello Stefan,

I would suggest that you contact WD to get support with your query, as that version of the product is not supported by Acronis. You can find more information here: https://kb.acronis.com/content/2201

Best regards.

Can you see the USB drive in file manager? I have found that recently Windows 11 Pro no longer assigns a drive letter to USB devices, they have to be assigned manually. Possibly a security enhancement.

Another possibility is that there is a limitation such that you can only backup using the OEM if there is an internal dive from the OEM.

Hope this helps

Ian

The filesystem used by the external drive might be an issue - it should be either NTFS or exFAT depending on the version of the OEM Acronis application - some OEM versions do not support exFAT for backup.

The release notes for the current version of Acronis True Image for Western Digital suggest the above limitation!

Supported file systems
• NTFS
• Ext2/Ext3/Ext4
• ReiserFS(3)*
• Linux SWAP*
• HFS+**/HFSX**
• FAT16/32/exFAT**
* File systems are supported only for disk or partition backup/recovery operations.
**File systems are supported only for disk or partition recovery operations (without resizing).

Supported storage media
• Hard disk drives (HDD)
• Solid-state drives (SSD)
• Networked storage devices
• USB 1.1 / 2.0 / 3.0, eSATA, FireWire (IEEE-1394), SCSI, and PC card storage devices

If your external drive is using exFAT then it cannot be used for a disk backup operation, only for recovery!!
