Ransomware / How to backup to Synology NAS with different user credentials?

Thread needs solution

Dear all,

could I - and how? - use TI2016 for making backups of my local Windows 10 Pro and store the backup data on my Synology NAS by using different user credentials?

I did not found a way to configure TI, and I have searched the forum but was unlucky to find the right information, probably I did not found the right search terms.

Background is the current hot topic of crypto-ransomware attacks. I want to protect my backup data automatically from access from my Windows 10 PC. Therefore I can not go on using normal file shares on my NAS any longer for this purpose.

Acronis TI needs to transfer the backup data to a remote file share by using a user account that is only used for backup and only this account must have access permission to the backup file share. Currently my TI runs under my normal user account (with local admin privileges) and that Windows account and -session has permanently mapped NAS files shares open (for photo and data etc). Therefore TI simply uses the file share access permissions of the current Windows session under my user account for access to *ALL* shared folders on my NAS.

Is there a solution and how do I need to configure TI, that it would be able to use a DIFFERENT user account for the backup destination?

Peter.

ATIH2016user,

ATI 2016 is fully capable of doing what you want to do...I have a Synology NAS and am running ATI 2016.  I have configured my NAS with 3 accounts that I use for backups.  The 3 accounts only have standard user privileges, and each account only has access to one Top Level Shared folder.

ATI stores NAS credentials in 2 different locations.  When performing backups and restores, the program uses credentials in the script file.  Script files are located in a folder that is usually hidden:

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

For general program use, ATI 2016 uses credentials stored in the Windows registry.  The problem with ATI 2016 is that it assumes the user wants to always use the same credentials.  So, to get ATI 2016 to do what you want it to do, you need to delete the username and password in the Windows Registry.

You can delete the username and password using regedit.  Navigate to: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Acronis\Connections\smb\YOURNASNAME

From there, you can do the deletes.

This is explained in the following link:
