How did Acronis get on my homebuilt personal computer?

Thread needs solution

Does anyone know?, because now I am getting a message at power off that says:  Acronis True Image is terminating current operation.

I didn't purchase it yet this seems like purchased software.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Cheryl, welcome to these user forums.

I have never heard of Acronis True Image being installed on any computers without the knowledge of the user or someone with direct access to the computer to do so.

ATIH is paid software but can also be found in OEM versions that are bundled with some brands of new disk drives, i.e. from WD, Seagate, Crucial, PNY etc.

If you are seeing the particular message that ATI is terminating current operation, that would possibly suggest that you have ATIH 2016 installed which is a purchase product, as this was a know issue in earlier builds of the product but fixed in the latest one.

Please check what is shown in the Control Panel, under Programs and Features, where if you do not want this software, there is an option to uninstall it.  If you see ATIH as installed, then try launching the main application and clicking on the Account page icon (shows as a head & shoulders icon in the left column), this would show if the product is licensed and activated, and should also show an email address if the account is signed in.

One further question, do you have anyone who helps you with your computer (locally or remotely) who may have installed ATI for you?

Hi Steve and thanks...No one ever sits at my computer or installs anything.  Under Task Manager I see Acronis running but didn't want to uninstall something that was needed by another program.  I have installed a SSD drive but it didn't come with Acronis either.  In order to post a question here this morning, I had to register too.  Silly me, I just looked and in the Start menu, there is Acronis 2015, which I did not install.  So I just tried to sign in and it's asking for a Serial # which I don't have.

Cheryl, sounds like this will be a mystery unless you can find another explanation.  However, as it is asking for a serial number, the software isn't activated or registered, so I would recommend just uninstalling it.

You can uninstall via the Control Panel as advised earlier, or you can use an uninstaller program like Revo or IObit to remove it.  If you still get any indications that any part of it is still there after doing a normal uninstall, there is an Acronis Cleanup Tool (link is below in my signature) that can be used to remove any residue left over.

I believe you are right Steve, thanks so much.  How it got installed I have no idea but I don't need it and have no activation code for it so will uninstall.
