Recovery Operation Failed on Restoring Image

Thread needs solution

I have a Dell Inspiron 17 7000 (7779) laptop running Acronis True Image 2017 on Windows 10 Pro (upgraded to it from Home when I bought the computer).  ATI works perfectly in creating a full image of the C: Drive and storing it on an external hard drive.  I've been using Acronis products for awhile now on HP laptops as well as a desktop computer I built myself, and have never had any serious issues when trying to restore an image.

When I bought this Dell machine, I was able to get Windows updated and all my software installed, then create the image with ATI.  To restore an image, I would have to change the boot order in the BIOS to allow for the machine to boot from the USB thumb drive I set up as the Acronis Rescue Media.  Acronis then loads, I specify the destinations for each partition in the image as well as the MBR, and the restore process starts, then quite often, fails.  It usually never gets past the "Validation" stage before a pop-up window says "Recovery Operation Failed".  I have tried restoring images from external hard drives that are bus-powered by the computer, also from a thumb drive, as well as from an external hard drive that was not bus-powered (an old WD Black Label drive, still under warranty but it's 4 years old, set up inside an enclosure unit so it operates as an external drive).  The same thing happens.  What's even weirder is that after one or more attempts, then the image DOES restore.  So overall, this experience has been one that has shown this recovery process is "buggy" on this computer.

So my question to the experts here on this board is, What am I doing wrong???  Any ides on this subject would be greatly appreciated, I really can't take the risk of being on the road with this computer, finding myself having to restore an image and it not restoring!

Amtrak288, welcome to these user forums.

From your description above, it seems that you are able to create backups fine when doing so from within Windows to your external backup drive(s) but are having problems when trying to restore data from these backups when booting from Acronis Rescue Media on USB.

You should not need to change the BIOS boot order on your Dell machine in order to boot from the USB media provided that you have set the option to boot from such media in the BIOS settings.  You should be able to press the F12 function key when booting and use the Boot override menu to select your USB media to boot from.

When booting from USB media, this should always be done in the same boot mode as used by your Windows 10 OS to boot, so if this is an EFI BIOS system, the USB media should also start using EFI / UEFI.  See webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS to check this point.

What type of USB ports / devices are involved in the Restore operation?  Are these USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports / devices?

There have been issues where the power demands of USB 3.0 (roughly double that of USB 2.0) have caused problems if devices are drawing power through the port.  If you have a powered USB Hub you can use, that may help for testing, same if you have a drive with its own power supply.

Beyond the above, when you are still active in the USB Rescue Media, please check the Logs that are still available in that environment as these may have more information that is relevant to this issue - you should also be able to save the log file to your USB stick to save a copy.
