Active Protection Won't Turn On in Build 9660

Thread needs solution

Icecold, good point, the card reader doesn't need to be actually physically in the computer but may be in other connected equipment such as a printer.

Thank you for replying ..No I haven't raised a ticket, but will do now.

I do 'back up' to a removable ESATA drive aswell , so I better update that ASAP, so once again thank you for the advice.

A bit embarrassing for Acronis this issue, as the big selling point for 2018 was the Ransomware protection.

Thank you replying... I don't get that option as I can't turn the protection on, unless I'm misunderstanding you, which quite possible..

Alan, you are correct, if AAP is turned off, then you don't see the option at the bottom right of the panel to open the Active Protection Settings, which is what Ekaterina was referring to for checking.  So a Catch22 in terms of checking or changing those settings as AAP needs to be on to do so!

I raised a ticket for this problem a few days ago, so far 'diddly squat' back from them, only an auto generated email saying it has been logged, I did notice it was classed as a Low priority.

One thing I will try is to remove or unplug my USB Hubs that I use, as the general theme for this issue seems to revolve around card-readers and usb printers. (I don't have either of those two)

Alan, it may take a little time for Acronis to reply to your ticket but they should be linking it to the general issue with build #9660 & AAP.

As for your USB hubs, check for any that include slots for any type of memory cards or sticks?

Alan, In case this helps figure things out with USB hubs, I have one Anker Powered USB3 Hub connected to a USB3 port on the back of my case (Gigabyte motherboard). I has 7 USB3 ports and 3 ports for power/charging alone, and it causes me no trouble with respect to AAP.

I also have a Lexar USB3 dual slot card reader that was the culprit in my case. When I unplugged it from my system AAP works as expected. When it is plugged in and empty, AAP exhibits the behavior of this forum topic.

I also have a Epson Artisan 735 photo printer connected wirelessly. It has a card reader built-in for xD/SD/CF, which I have mapped as a Z: drive. This causes no trouble with respect to AAP.

Thank you Darryl for your reply.

I will be away for a week now ,  so will try and sort this when I get back, and hopefully by the time I return, the bods at Acronis will have found a fix for this problem that has  been created with this upgrade.

Did you notice that when usb stick (or any other media) is connected, Active Proctetion process apparently do something and Taskmanager shows activity. So, maybe this is a simple display bug.

It is  possible, that AP application works although user interface shows otherwise. Besides, AP process is present in Taskmanager and use over 70Mb of ram. So, in my understanding it must be running.

Sorry my bad syntax, English is not my native language.

"Sorry my bad syntax, English is not my native language." Nothing to be sorry about; syntax looks OK to me - the important thing is that you have managed to convey without ambiguity what you have found. I found it easy to understand on first reading.

Ian

There is a new build (9850) released overnight (Melbourne Australia time). See release notes. Where the card reader is cause of the problem it is said to be fixed.

Ian

Many thanks for update on the new version, I will try this when I am back in a few days time.

Thanks for the input, IanL-S

It seems that Active Proctection now working properly. What is interesting, are suspicious processes. In my case, AP categorize suspicious as Seamonkey (a common Mozilla based Web Browser and email client), 3 different processes from MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner Statistics Server (these are associated to display adapter overclocking and other settings) and my Sound Blaster's support software.

I know, that these are completely legit programs, and i'm been using them many years. Maybe the mechanism which desides what procesesses are suspicious or not, needs more accuracy?

Juha, please see KB 60193: Acronis True Image 2018: Active Protection blocks legitimate applications for how to whitelist your valid applications being treated as suspicious.

Ok, thanks for the tip. Whitelisting done.

Many thanks for update on the new version, I will try this when I am back in a few days time.
