SSD won't boot after clone or restore

Piers, I can confirm that your build 16299 aka 1709 is not an Insiders build but is simply the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version, which I am also using.
My Insiders build on the Redmond 4 track is currently build 17127 as of yesterday when it did the latest Insiders update (from 17123). This is shown on the Settings > System > About page as below for me.

Can someone decipher this email from support
"Hello Piers,
Thank you for your email.
I understand your concern, however as per shared Acronis system report it says:
Windows 10 home
Version 10.0.16299
OS Build 16299"
Am I missing something here? My screenshot is identical to Steve's!
I refered support to this kbase - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4088776/windows-10-update-kb40…

Piers, you are definitely not running an Insiders build with the details shown so the Acronis person you are dealing with is wrong in this assertion!
I would recommend replying to the email and referencing this forum topic and asking for the issue to be escalated to their second level support, plus I would recommend dropping a PM to Ekaterina asking her to review this same issue and the confusion around what is an Insiders build and what is not!

In reply to Piers, you are definitely… by truwrikodrorow…

Brilliant, thanks Steve! I thought I was going crazy.
Just in the process of composing the email, and asking to speak to senior colleagues, and to read this thread again! Good to know the right language to use.
I also linked to

Will also PM Ekaterina!
Thanks so much for quick action as always :)

FYI all Insiders builds have text shown in the bottom right corner of the screen just above the taskbar area with the words Evaluation copy and the build release number, i.e. 17127.... I would post a screen shot but am currently booted to the 1709 build (dual-boot) and also running a backup.
See also: Windows 10 Redstone 4 (RS4) Builds Changelog which documents all the various Insiders builds for RS4. Also Windows 10 Redstone 5 (RS5) Builds Changelog for those users on the 'Skip Ahead' Insiders track. Finally see Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Version 1709) Changelog for the actual version you are using.

Thanks Steve, helpful to know.
I received the following from support today.
"I apologize for any inconvenience caused to you. On Mar 13, 2018 - Microsoft today released OS Build 16299.309 (cumulative update) for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Windows 10 Version 1709) users.
I will check with T2 support team to escalate the case."
Making progress...

Piers, the reply shows the need to push back against some of the responses when working on a support case. I do wonder at times if some of the people are mainly working from a set script rather than from experience, at least until you get through to working with the level 2 folk?

Latest response - I'm pushing back, yet feel I'm speaking to chat bot!
"Dear Piers
The machine is dual boot, clarify the exact circumstances that lead to this crash . When it happened, what the product was doing when it happened and how often this happens. The more details you provide on the circumstances of the crash, the faster we will be able to find the root cause and fix the issue.
I look forward to your response and feel free to contact us for any further questions. "
He didn't quite understand when I explained that I booted to a different drive on the same machine to get at the logs he asked for.
I've asked to escalate again!
- Do we know, if anyone can successfully restore cloud based system drives?
More worryingly - I've been doing some more testing with another new back up [created a new back up of my working system, then created daily back ups]. The first back up restored fine, but later incrementals are failing. There's a different error though, I can get into windows, but the windows button doesn't work, no tool bar etc. Couldn't get successfully into safe mode either. This feels like some kind of corruption in the component hive (or similar system) which is being backed up poorly. Steve, my original problem you might remember which you helped with, was a restored back up, which failed to let me install windows updates and windows troubleshooter. The fix was to do an inplace upgrade/install which fixed all the problems.

This is the only method that salvaged the installation of my EVO960 NVME SSD. Some of the items in your list didn't work but going into safe mode and rebooting did the trick along with the other steps.

Acer Esquire, cloned 1 TB active HDD to another 1TB HDD. Clone completes, boots into Advanced Startup, select exit & continue to Windows 8.1, reboots, wind up same Advanced Start Up Window.
Any help appreciated.

Mark, welcome to these public User Forums.
When you created the clone did you then shutdown the computer, remove the source HDD and replace it by the target HDD before attempting to boot from it into Windows?
Please see forum topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this - which was written after dealing with many cloning issues in the forums.

^ THANK YOU! *The link to 'Cloning, How not To' (Wish I'd found it sooner!) - Followed all clone /install instructions for new SSD - the Crucial videos make it look so straight forward, with happy customers commenting how easy installation was, but all I got was a rotten Blue Screen of Death..! After days of troubleshoot dead-ends, suggestions from the SSD Help centre - 'update BIOS' 'change cables' - finally solved it with Acronis 'Rescue Media Builder'! - Hallelujah!

I had the issue that when I cloned my old SSD onto my new SSD, the process completed successfully, but the new SSD would not successfully boot into Windows 10 - it would start showing the graphics for Windows 10, but would get stuck forever on the swirly graphic.
To make a long story short, https://kb.acronis.com/content/56634 held the missing step: after the PC shuts down on completion of the clone process, DISCONNECT THE OLD DRIVE! After I did this, the PC booted into Windows without a problem.
Now I have to find a way to connect and format my old SSD drive so I can use it for a scratch drive for Adobe programs.
Hope this helps somebody.

Jeff, once you are successfully booted from your PC normally, you can attach any external USB devices, including your old SSD and then reformat it etc without any issues. Just be careful to select the correct drive for formatting!
