Backup Space Management

Thread solved

ATI 2020 Build 25700

Perhaps I'm just missing a setting someplace, but it seems to me that ATI's automatic cleanup method doesn't provide any means to initiate a cleanup based on the lack of available space.  Instead, if a disk fills up before a backup operation is completed, the operation is aborted and an error condition is set.  No further backup will occur until you manually delete older backups and request the backup to start.

I suppose that part of the problem is that the program has a difficult time estimating the size of the backup before it starts. However, it would be possible for the program to delete the oldest recovery set after aborting because of running out of space and then redo the backup.

Windows System Restore seems able to do this.

Is this a feature that should go on the request list or is there some way to do it now?

Pete, ATI has never allowed any older backups to be cleaned up via the automatic cleanup rules before a new Full backup has been created, this is to avoid leaving users with no backups at all.

Automatic cleanup has worked fine for me personally and I have not encountered the scenario with any of my drives filling up, but this is mainly down to careful choice of the automatic cleanup rules in conjunction with the settings for my Backup Schemes.

Example:

I mainly create Incremental backups where 5 or 6 incrementals are created followed by a new Full backup image.

My cleanup rules use 'Store no more than 2 recent version chains', so I know that I need space on my backup destination drive to store a maximum of 3 x Full backup files, along with either 10 or 12 Incremental files for those chains.  Once a 3rd full backup has been created, then automatic cleanup deletes the oldest chain of 1 x Full plus 5 or 6 Incremental files.
