Can't Open Backup - Versions Missing

Thread needs solution

I'm using True Image 2014.  I have, in the past, had to recreate my backup from scratch.  The reason doesn't matter, I just have.  When I do this, I have tried to rename the backup and restart the version number; however, I could never get that to take.  All it it was restart the same backup and continue on in the version number chain.

I'm in a position now where I need to recover from the backup.  When I attempt to open the data backup I'm presented with a message indicating that version XX is not available.  I click 'Skip' with all the ones it can't find.  When that process is complete, I'm presented with a message that the backup cannot be accessed because there are missing versions.

Solution?

Thank you

Robert, this is a known issue that you can overcome in several ways.

  1. You can run a validation of your backup task that created the backup files you are wanting to restore, then when this throws up error messages for missing versions, take the option to Ignore each missing file until the validation completes.
  2. Boot from the Acronis bootable Rescue Media and this does not care about missing versions providing the backup version chain is complete, as the Acronis Database information is not used outside of Windows.
Note: Only complete version chains can be restored.  For incremental versions this means you cannot have any missing files in the chain or else the chain can only be restored from the last file before the missing one.  For differential versions, there is no problem as all differential files contain all changes made since the previous full backup image.

Thanks, Steve.  I'll try the validation and see what happens.  Understood that no information can be missing from the chain in incremental backups.  That shouldn't be a problem.  When I tried to start from scratch I deleted the previous iterations so it had to create the initial backup as the entire data set.  There's nothing missing after that.
