Migrating files, different systems

Thread needs solution

Is this possible?

I have a laptop with 32 bit XP PRO sp3 Centrino, I want to migrate files to a 64 bit Amd quad windows 7, can it be done?

Thanks, John

If mean mean migrate the entire old disk to the new machine, tery messy, you need to have diff hardware drivers and you might need some diff versions of some of your programs or you might need them installed differently for 64bit, and even then the Registry won't be quite right. There are work arounds for most of this but it's easier to start fresh.

If it was me, and this might be what you are asking to do, I'd copy or backup all my data files (docs, spreadsheets, etc. ) and restore those to the new machine, but as far as the OS and programs, I'd want those installed fresh.

You need to poke around to see where all your data files are on the xp machine -- probably most ar under My Documents undless you been forcing them to go to other places.

There are some programs around that will migrate you data files to a new machine -- I think one comes with some hoarddrives you can buy. These jsut search the usual places and copy the files from there to the usual places for data files in W7.
But ATI is not designed for that specific purpose.

I agree with Scott. Even though some tools exist to supposedly migrate everything, including applications and settings, to a new dissimilar OS, I wouldn't do it. Especially with older applications, I've often needed to make adjustments when moving to Vista or Windows 7, such as running in compatibility mode or installing patches. I wouldn't trust any tool that said it could take care of all that automatically.

Yes, I haven't even seen a program that claims to move files between OS's, the new lap is a Dell m5110, 1.5g of dedicated video memory, AMD quad, A8 Vision processor gaming machine for $649 Nice fast machine.

Old machine, Dell E1705 Centrino, 1 g of ram slower than molasses.

If you hear of a program that claims to move programs from 1 OS to another, I'd love the hear about it.

Thanks, John

Hmmm, doesn't W7 claim to do that if you stay on the same hardware -- i.e., upgrade the os from Vista (and only Vista) to W7 with programs remaining in intact, but you have to read all the fine print. It's usually easier, and more reliable, to reinstall.
