This week I revisited validating disk image backups, which had been problematical earlier in the year. Well, this time, ATIH 2012 failed to validate disk image backups. Progress status remained at "Calculating estimated time ..." or "0%" complete indefinitely. But even worse, trying to cancel that task hung / crashed the system, requiring a forced shutdown of the PC.
Last night I installed a trial version of the latest ATIH 2012 on a Dell 470, a 32-bit Windows 7 OS system. Validation of the Acronis backup "tib" disk images on a Seagate Expansion USB hard drive (HD) worked okay. So, maybe the problem was 64-bit related ...
Well, this morning I had a hunch about external HD interfaces (connections). So, on my HP i7, I connected the Seagate Expansion USB drive and ran validation on the Acronis disk image backups stored on that drive. Validation succeeded. Canceling a Validation job also was graceful. Evidently, the validation problem was not a 64-bit issue.
So, on the HP i7, I connected the Fantom backup drive via USB rather than eSATA. Validation of Acronis disk image backups on that drive, which had hung the system previously, succeeded as well. Canceling a validation job also was worked okay.
Hmm ... I noticed that section "1.1.5.4 Supported storage media" of the User Guide does not mention eSATA -- only USB 1.1 / 2.0 / 3.0, and FireWire (IEEE-1394). So, ... but section "3.6.3 Acronis Nonstop Backup data storage" mentions "You can use an external disk with any of the following interfaces: USB (including USB 3.0), eSATA, FireWire, and SCSI." So, ...
Are there any outstanding or known issues using eSATA drives?
Thanks, James F, perhaps there are differences between eSATA systems. As far as I know (and can check) I've got the latest driver versions, as well as the latest version of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver Windows 7 (64-bit) for my HP i7 desktop PC.
For my latest tests today, I booted the PC with the external eSATA drive already powered on. Attempts to validate a disk image in these cases resulted in validation running for a minute or so (a few percent progress) and then terminating; the log file showed the following:

The Acronis Knowledge Base had no info on the error codes.
The PC was still left in a state which required a forced shutdown.
Note that the log entry saying that the archive was corrupt is inaccurate, because connecting the same drive via USB resulted in validation working okay.
Which Fantom drive do you own? Did you apply the Microsoft patch for advanced format drives? If not try this patch first. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018. If this is no help, Please continue. Can the internal hard disk be removed from the case. If so, try directly connecting the drive to your internal SATA controller as a secondary drive and try a validation that way if possible. Also if the eSATA cable is removable, do you have another to test with.

Running Backups with validations and restores via eSata has never been a problem on any of the TrueImage home releases in the past three years.
