Restore TIB changed its extension to_(C)1

Thread needs solution

Backed up in April to an external hard drive and created one file with a .TIB extension. Had a virus which forced me to wipe my disk and reload Win 7 and all applications. Then started restoring individual directories, files, etc. from the backup external hard disk. However, now the backup file has changed its extension to CO and will not expand into its directory tree to allow me to pick and choose what I want to restore. I don't know what could have happened, but now I have only the restore with 49GB that I can't access on the external hard disk.

File properties define the file as an Acronis TIB Archive. Is it possible to recover to make it a directory that I can open and copy files?

Correction: However, now the backup file has changed its extension to CO and will NOT expand into its directory tree to allow me to pick and choose what I want to restore.

right click on the file, select rename, and change the extension to .tib
