Windows Backup Conversion - Two VHD Files

Thread needs solution

I want to convert my backup that I created with Win7. In WindowsImageBacku\[computername]\Backup[date] there are two vhd files that Acronis finds. Do I need to convert each individually? Will Acronis know that the backup consists of two vhd files (I assume it does consist of two or there wouldn't be two vhd files, right?)?

Once I have the tib files do I just create a startup disk (Windows does not boot anymore) and start Acronis from there?

As a side note, Windows Backup & Restore could not restore the backup. It failed in the middle of the restore which is why the system does not boot anymore. It keeps on failing. I did move the folder to a different drive. I am not sure if that is the issue Windows restore fails.

Most likely one file is for the system reserved partition (hidden partition), the other one is for the C:\ partition.
To see which one is which, the size is a good indicator. The System reserved partition VHD should be less than 100MB.
If both VHD are bigger, you have probably some other kind of hidden partition, and it might be the active partition. Ideally, you'd want to restore that partition, but you fix your computer with the original Windows installation DVD otherwise.

It would make your life easier if you know which VHD corresponds to what. A way to do that is to convert to TIB, go to another computer that has Acronis installed, mount each TIB, unhide hidden files and system protected files in Windows explorer, and inspect the content.

Once you have determined which partition is which, which partition is active, you can restore each partition, ideally in the same order as they were before.

Many computers come with OEM, recovery or other hidden partition that contains information to restore the computer to factory state. It is not necessary to restore these partitions, but, again, you may have to use the Windows installation DVD to repair the computer in some cases.
