Problems with Backup space

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis 2012 TIH. I am backing up on a weekly basis to an external 1.5TB USB hard drive. I have the backup job set to do version chain. This job will not reliably run and I need some advise:

I frequently get a "disk is full message", about 5 weeks into the cycle - though the disk is only ~half full and the new backup should not be large enough to exceed capacity. This has repeatedly stopped the job from running.

These jobs run unattended, and I recently changed settings to allow it to prompt me for extra space, and extra store on a local (connected hard drive) so the job could complete. In the most recent run, I had a 714Gb full backup on the external drive, and 5 incrementals ranging between 6-49Gb - total storage was ~823Gb on the 1.5TB drive. When the backup ran, it did in fact FILL the disk, and then prompt me to ID a new location & it proceeded to make a 49Gb file on a seperate location - then it removed all the old incrementals & the disk was left with only 709Gb of data stored (and the 49Gb file on the other disk) - but unless I had stuck around to tell it a new location to do the 49Gb of overflow, it would have again failed "due to lack of storage space". What gives? There was LOTs of space?!

I suspect the ATIH needs temp space to develop the backup. Is there a way to set it to use temp space from someplace else than the drive it is backing up to? I have attached drives with space, but I use the external USB drive to store the backup sets since I am trying to protect from loss of large internal drives (I have had 2 fail in the last 3 years)...?

I suppose I could run the backups to the large internal drives and then transfer them to the external, but that adds to complexity & ends up not mitigating many of the risks I am trying to cover with the backup process in the first place. Plus, the backup takes ~1 day to run & transfer would have to be scripted and would take another day+

I would really appreciate some help understanding if there is a different way I can/should set this up so it can reliably run unattended. I realy like ATIH, but this is a pain. I suspect I have ~4-5 weeks to figure this out since I just got things running again, and the version chaining will create a new full backup in ~5 weeks then & the storage will be close to capacity.

I have attached logs if they will be helpful.

Take a look at Grovers Guide (Thanks Grover) to using 2012 here: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/28705. If you are using the default version chain, it will definitely fill your 1.5TB drive if you have auto consolidation turned on, as it needs to have at least 2.5 times the space of the largest backup to be able to consolidate properly. Try using some of the techniques in Grovers guide to help with data retention and cleanup.

Hi
Just a quick note to say you are right in what you are thinking, TI does indeed need temp space to make the back up, the back up is made and then if the program is set to it will then delete the older versions of the back up, this is why you are having problems.

It works this way in case of any problems, for example if TI deleted the old backup first and then there was a problem creating the new back up you would have NOTHING :-(

But im afraid i dont think there is anyway you can ask it to use temp space else where.
