Recovery Problem - Lenova /WD External Backup
Hi I have a Lenovo G780 laptop with a One key recovery feature. This will put the PC back to factory state but you lose all your prgrams & files. I bought Acronis True Image Home for the purpose of having another way to store all my files, programs, etc and not having to manually install everything back if i have a problem.
Now, My WD external harddrive has a feature where you have to unlock it to store your files on that partition of it ( I guess that is how I would explain it). So, when you reboot windows - you have to double click on that drive - there is a prgram called UNLOCK.EXE - you put your password in and then you see all your files on that external device.
I see when I tried to do a recoery with the acronis - the system needs to reboot - and I wonder when it does, if because that backup is on part of the external drive after a password is entered is that why I get a disk reading error?? How can I do a recovery with this device or should I buy another external device - one that does not have passwords to get to another partition on it.
What would you recommend of me getting for future so I don't have this problem again and can I get the acronis to recover these files in the password part??
Thanks Dave

Thanks for the reply - of course I don't know how to disable the disable the encryption on the WD drive so here is my next question -
What external devic e would you recommend that is easy to use, plug and play, that you know works well with the acronis software so if I do backup to
it, I don't have to disable this or that - have any suggestions?? A device that when I go to recover - it works!
Also, when I went to recover is there always 2 files there - one looked liked a blank partition and the other must of been the windows operating system - I am to click both to recover - right??

The WD drive you have is fine, you can disable the encryption following the directions on the WD site for your drive. I have done it many times.
Once you have disabled the encryption, it will act like any other normal external drive.
Here is a disscussion about the WD encryption you may find useful: http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-Software/Unable-to-disable-virtual-CD-qu….
The complete disk backup created by Acronis will contain at least one partition, and may contain two or more. To restore your system correctly, you would need to restore all the partitions contained within the backup.
Be sure you have created a FULL disk based backup using Acronis to be sure you have ALL the partitions on your drive in the backup file.

I think I got it - I disabled the password on my book and got rid of the virtual drive - now my next question is when i go into Acronis and try to recover - I select my backup date - there is 2 files under there. One I select them I get a box that says CHOOSE FILE DESTINATION - it won't let me put anything in there - do I have to go somewhere else in settings and tell it how to restore or recover things?? I am so close but looks like I need something in there because the recover button is still grayed out.. Thanks dave

Did you select the pulldown and nothing happens?

In addition, if you are restoring your system disk from an earlier backup, you should boot to the Acronis Rescue media to do so. This eliminates problems with having Acronis need to reboot the system and run the Linux based rescue environment from your hard drive (it modifies the startup of your system).

When I click on the Destination drop down - it quickly says Creating Destination List but nothing appears...
I have a Micro Flash Drive installed in my laptop and in Acronis I clicked on the Create Bootable Media button and so now on my flash drive I have a folder called Recovery Manager -
Can I restart my PC - have it boot off of that drive (E) and do a recovery from there??

Yes, that would be the next step to try. It is always best to use bootable media when doing restore/recovery. It is possible that the bootable media may not see your hardware correctly, but only booting to it will confirm if there are any issues with seeing your hardware (drives) while in the Rescue Media environment (Linux based). Be sure to pay close attention to the drive letter assigments in the bootable environment, as they may be different then in Windows, do not change any of the destination drive letters Acronis assigns when doing a recovery in the bootable environment, they will be correct when Windows boots up.

I was able to reboot off a usb flash drive...Then I saw the (H) my book drive and saw my backup files and FILE I wanted to recover - but then I got lost - I don''t know what to do then - one option is recover files & folders & 1 is for partitions & drives - I don't know which one to choose.
I don't want to mess up my pc not knowing what to do....I think it says where do you want to recover to - how the heck to do I know where they go - so looks like I will just be lost - and hope I never how to do this again

Files and Folders recovery is what it says it is for, Files and Folders. Partition recovery will wipe out and restore your entire partitions. If you have not had a chance to read through the users guide, I would suggest doing so before attempting any restores from Acronis. You can find product documentation here: http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation. Be sure to look in the older versions sections for your particular version of software.

David,
As MVP James F has indicated, the documentation can be very helpful--especially to anyone new to Acronis.
You do not indicate which version of Windows nor which version of TrueImage is being discussed.
If you want your backup to be able to restore your system onto a new disk or an old disk (if virus), the type backup you need is disk or partition backup which includes all partitions. A files only backup will NOT restore a non-working computer. If using versions 2013, or 2012, this first link could be helpful--even if using 2011 or 2010.

When restoring backups, the link below could be of assistance. Several method of restoring are listed depending upon your needs.
