How to clone Win7 to use it with 2nd Partition for testing

Thread needs solution

Hello,
seems I am missing the point somehow.
Hope someone of you can give me the hint in need...

I am using a Fijitsu Notebook with WIN7. Before completely converting to WIN8 I wanted to try it out. My Plan was / is:

Shrinking the partition down to 160GB, so the other 130GB are free, and new partition "D:" can be created
--> did this with DD11, worked.

Then I restored a backup, using TIH2013, to te new partition "D"
--> worked well

now comes the trick (or my fault...)
I installed OS selector and was under the impression I simply could somehow activate the WIN7 on the second partition "D" as my second OS, which I intended to upgrade to WIN 8 then at a later point in time.
But the OS selector is telling me there is no second OS...

Any help how to clone my win7 to a second partition would be aprecciated

Jackko,

You have different ways of achieving what you want, and a multi boot system is a way to go, but it is pretty drastic.

You could simply do a complete disk and partition backup of your windows 7 installation, then upgrade to Windows8. If you don't like it, restore Windows7 and you are set. I did the back in forth a couple of times for various reasons.

You could also use a virtual machine. Install VMware and install Windows 7 in the Virtual machine, then upgrade to Windows 8.

OS Selector is to some extent out of date, it has some difficulty with Windows 7 and as Windows 8 uses a different boot manager may well have major problems with W8.

There is though if you have the space a much easier way to test W8 so long as your Windows 7 is the Ultimate version. this is to create Windows 8 as a VHD and then add it to the Windows 7 boot manager or alternatively use the Windows 8 boot manager to boot Widnows 7.

If you don't like Windows 8 all that has to happen is remove the entry from the Windows boot manager and delete the VHD file.

This is how I have my Windows 8 on my Windows 7 laptop.

Txs for your suggestions
unfortunately my WIn7 is not an ultimate version, no VHD / VM.
finally I took another laptop did a backup of the current OS and installed Win 8.
After using it for a while.....I restored Win7.
Win8 seems to be a nice payground, optimized for all the social media, rather than an OS I need...To few of my apps have been rated as Win8 compatible, not even my printer...
Anyway - mission accomplished
