Unable to backup a Hyper-V Failover Cluster

Thread needs solution

I have a Hyper-V Failover Cluster that I'm trying to backup. I have ABR11 Virtual Edition installed on my two Hyper-V nodes and I have the management server installed on a separate "Host Controller" server. I have a backup plan setup and it's pretty basic, but it refuses to run and errors out within seconds. After drilling into the history logs I see that every single one of the virtual machines I had selected for backup are highlighted in red regardless if they were online or offline at the time.

Here's the log file for one of the VMs, I suspect the others are identical:

Command 'Backing up' has failed.

I have the backup location (\\WIN2K8R2-HC-01\RD1000-01) configured as an unmanaged centralized vault within Acronis if that makes any difference. Also, when I configured the sharing I set Everyone with full access, but Acronis keeps asking for credentials... Not sure if it has anything to do with the backups failing.

Not sure if this matters, but all servers (physical or virtual) are running Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit. Now, I know this worked once in my first test earlier today and Acronis did succeed in making backups, although it was only of the offline VMs. The online VMs still failed and I suspect it's the same issue as the one I'm getting now. The new plan I'm testing now is essentially the same as the one that half worked. The only difference is that I've checked off the entire Hyper-V cluster for backup instead of individual VMs under a single host as before.

Help would be really appreciated.

UPDATE

After posting this I decided to poke around some more. I set the backup plan to use the Administrator's credentials and now it kinda works. It's backing up one online VM right now, but all others (online or offline) are still highlighted in red and marked as completed (failed really).

Hello Alexandar Velkov,

Welcome to our forum. Thank you for posting your question. I am happy to assist you to solve the issue.

You always should use Administrator account for backing up your virtual environment. Please be aware, that the Agent for Hyper-V have to get access to the backup destination. You are using a network share. It is recommended not to use removable drives in any condition for backing up via Acronis Management Server and Acronis Storage Node. Also ensure, that the network share have full access for the administrator.

Use DOMAIN\Administrator or SERVER\Administrator to ensure, that the credentials are used correct. If set, remove public access from the network share.

Let me know, if you need additional help please.

Thank you.

Hey Peter,

Well, I've been messing around a bit more and from what I've noticed is if I enable multiple VMs to backup at the same time, even if it's capped at 2 (which I assume is 2 per Hyper-V node) it still fails all VMs. If I have the setting disabled, it seems to be working. I do believe this happens even with the Administrator account, although I'll have to double check.

Another ridiculously huge issue I'm having is with the speed of the backups. Acronis is backing up a single VM at a time, currently, at ~15MB/s (max I've seen is 20MB/s). That is just ridiculous. I've spent all day researching how I can get it to improve, but nothing I do seems to make it work. I've read that I should have Task Offload and some other Offload disabled on the VMs, which I went through and did for all VMs. I even reconfigured all the servers (physical and virtual) to work with Jumbo Frames. All of this and the performance of Acronis is piss poor. And, the servers are not weak either: Dual Xeon X5690s at 3.47Ghz, 64GB of RAM, 6Gb HBAs to the SAN, Teamed 2Gb and 3Gb network adapters, etc. Backing up should be a walk in the park performance wise, but I'm seriously starting to question the money we've spent on Acronis...

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how I can get multiple VMs to backup at the same time and how I can get the backup speed substantially improved.

Hello Alexandar Velkov,

Thank you for your reply.

The reported error message indicates an access problem to your backup destination. The reply shows me, that you run in multiple problems. Can you give me information about the used build of your Acronis product?

Issues regarding backup speed only can be analyzed, when tracing the network during backup. See this article from our knowledge base with instructions about.

For analyzing this kind of problems I suggest to contact our support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

Let me know if you need additional help please.

Thank you.

Hey Peter,

I'm using build 17440. As far as the network tracing, I see that the article mentions sending the saved trace file to your customer support. I'm afraid I can't do that because my support agreement expired just less than two months ago... I also can't seem to find how much it costs to renew it so I can decide if it's worth it.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello Alexandar Velkov,

Thank you for your reply.

You can contact our renewal team to get the proper information about your support subscription renewal.

Is the transfer speed displayed in GUI of product? What does it show?

How is the backup organized? What kind of vault is used (personal, centralized).

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hey Peter,

I don't really trust the displayed speed because it jumps all over the place and like right now it says it's running at 24-65MB/s, but when I look at the receiving server it's getting about 18MB of actual network utilization.

The vault used is Centralized unmanaged.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello Alexandar Velkov,

Thank you for your quick reply.

As for your first post, the destination could not be accessed. Can you remove 'Everyone' from this share and set your Domain Admin with full rights. Then update the settings for your centralized vault. You should not longer receive this error. Acronis uses the credentials every time.

I also recommend to contact support analyzing this issue. Did you contact our renewal team in order to have access to support?

Let me know if you need additional help please.

Thank you.
