[RESOLVED] Online Backup Consolidating Archive
I recently began using the Online Backup feature. After a few backups I noticed that the time spent in the "Consolidating Archive" phase was increasing geometrically. This is happening for both of the two backups I have online. (One is 14.09 GB and the other is 13.77 GB.)
Yesterday I ran an online backup for the 14.09 GB PC. The log for this operation shows that the backup phase started at 4:46:32 PM and completed at 5:02:18 PM. The "Consolidating Archive" phase completed at 9:06:13 PM.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem> Four hours to Consolidate is unacceptable; and the next time I run an on line backup the Consolidation will be considerably longer.
Please contact Anton directly for the solution.

I'm not sure what you mean by "creating a new and simple custom scheme". Please explain.
I strongly doubt that other CPU activity could have anything to do with the elongation of the consolidation process. (I have a Core i7 machine.) To test this a ran another backup on 10/18. Very little had changed since my previous backup. Before starting the backup I disconnected all external devices and shutdown all programs. The backup phase lasted 30 minutes; the consolidation phase lasted 5 hours and 30 minutes.
Is it not true that the consolidation process runs principally on the "Cloud Server" and not on my machine?

@JW Deignan: Do you know anything more?
I have upgraded recently from TI 2012 to TI 2013 and now I experience these extremely long consolidation phases when doing Online backup (it was not so with 2012). I have about 120 GB now in my backup. My Internet speed is not so high, just 8 Mbit down and 1 Mbit up. But this can't explain this issue.
Normally an online backup of new and changed files takes for me 0,5 hours and the consolidation phase takes about 15 hours! Even if I only backup one small file (let's say, 1 kB), the consolidation phase still takes this long time. And TI says that this phase is 2% of the whole backup (it says "True Image: 98% complete - [computer name]" during all this 15, or so, hours).
I can still work fine with my computer during this phase, but if I need to restart my computer, or if Windows Update wants to make a restart during middle of the night because of a security update (I start my backup at 00:00), that is not possible, because when you try to restart, you will be met with the following message:
Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete.
And then you have to turn your computer off and start it again.
Acronis support called my today and said both that this is by design and that it is an issue that they are working on. Hmm... This can't be by design, but must be some kind of "bug". I hope they can fix it soon or I will have to consider other backup options.

My guess is that it's a problem with the housekeeping after the new (consolidated) backup file is made) -- old files need to be deleted and that ati is tripping up at this point and is hanging -- that's why is seems locked at 98%, seems to take forever, and will not relinquish the PC to you until you crash/boot the machine. I wish I could say why. Apparently Acronis is aware that a design element is causing this issue, which is how I interpret their response to you.
IF the online backup is the key feature you use, I'd go back to ati2012 until this issue is fixed in ati203. Or else skip on-line backups if that strategy can be made to work for you.
good luck,
sh

Thanks Scott Hieber! So you haven't heard about this problem from Acronis yourself?
The Online Backup is the most important feature for me. And actually, I was happy with 2012 (and the Online Backup) until it stopped working. When I reinstalled 2012 it couldn't continue my old 120 GB backup but prompted me to start a new one. Since I didn't want to that, the support suggested me to try 2013 which had no problems continuing the old backup, or so it seemed. Because of all this problems (and hours of error searching) Acronis gave me the 2013 upgrade for free. It was not until later a found this new problem. So I am stuck here...

I'm not familiar with the problem but I don't use online backups.

Today the backup took around 22 hours! Soon it will not complete until the next backup should start. And then you can't do a backup every day!??

Has Acronis solved the problem now? I just note that on December 2 the backup started at 00:30, the consolidation phase at 00:56 and finished at 23:52 (the consolidation phase took 23 hours!). But today the backup started as normal at 00:30, the consolidation phase at 00:50 and finished at 01:32 (the consolidation phase took only 40 minutes!).
Can anyone confirm this?

I just found this note from Jeremy Western on December 1: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/35518. Maybe not a confirmation, but anyway a note that something is happening...

I said "hello" to early. The problem still persists. Today the consolidation phase has still not finished after 7 hours. I also found out that the backup yesterday - for some reason - did not backup any new or changed files (but that it has done today, I can see). So, back to square one...

Now that is happening which I was afraid of: the backup takes more than 24 hours which means that Online Backup is only doing a backup very second day, even if it is scheduled for daily run. That is also the reason that the backup on December 4 (which I mention in previous post) didn't backup "any new or changed files" - actually it never run!
So the last consolidation phase started December 5 01:01 and finished on December 6 03:47 (nearly 27 hours). The backup of files took only 31 minutes.
I really hope a solution is coming soon. Or otherwise every backup soon will take 1 week, even if only one small file has changed since last backup.
So Acronis technicians - where are you? Any solution soon?

Anyone found a solution yet? I have had a ticket with support open for days and although I have the same problem they don't seem to be able to help!!!

Just like to say that I have the same problem, stuck at Consolidating Archive, and cannot shut down the computer as it says operations are in progress. My archive is around 56GB and I have a very slow network connection but there does not seem to be much network activity.

I hope this info helps. I managed to resolve my problem (without the help of Acronis SUpport)
Like you I noticed that there was no network activity between myself and Acronis cloud which lead me to belive that the problem was on the cloud side of things. In order to try resolve the problem I started to remove folders from my backup selection to see what would happen.
My configuration is such that I have my User data on a different drive to my OS so I started by unselecting everything from the OS drive. I basically had my c:\users folder selected (this includes alot of app data and system files)> I only left my D:\Users Folders enabled.
I then deleted my C:\ folders from the cloud and as soon as I did this the backup completed perfectly with a 2 min interval during consolidating archive leg of backup.
It is clearly a problem with the Acronis servers/service that is causing this. I dont know what it is but I get the feeling its to do with frequently changed or locked files?
Sorry I cant be of more help but I hope you will al least be able to try de-selecting some folders until you find the ones that are causing the problem

Send a private message to Anton on this forum, explain to him your problem and ask for a support request to Acronis on the Web Acronis site (as you paid for online disk space you are allowed to request support).
I had the same problem during consolidation phase (ATIH hung). Last week, I received from Anton a link to download a pre-release of ATIH2013 and now it works (this release is in english, not in french, however it works; it's better than a release wich hangs).
May be Anton can help you as for me.
French: native language; English: Oooops !

Thanks for the info Bosco,
My backup is selected via Categories rather than file paths, but the problem maybe very similar to yours, as despite me excluding hidden and system folders, and only having Categories selected the on-line back is processing AppData and other system/hidden files (I have an on-going support request for that issue).
It's been consolidating for something over 36 hours so far!
