Is this possible with True Image?

Thread needs solution

Hello, I am currently evaluating True Image 2013 to replace my current backup solution and I have a question to see if this is possible.

I have recently purchased a Western digital My Book Live NAS and it came with a backup software called WD Smartware. It does a decent job at backup up selected files and folder, but the problem is its constantly running and I want something that runs on a scheduled basis. Now a cool little feature it has is if a file on the PC is deleted, it will keep that deleted file in the backup, and when Im browsing thru the archive, it shows that the file has been deleted from the PC and I can restore the file if needed. This stays no matter how many times a backup is performed.

Now in the trial version of True Image, I am trying to recreate the same scenario, but no matter what option I choose, after so many backups the file that was deleted after the 1st backup started, will not be in the archive. I have tried this with many different backup schemes including incremental with automatic cleanup and other options. I have even tried the "Do not delete the first version of the backup option" but when I look for the deleted file in the recovery mode it does not look in the First version. This is easily solved if I tell it to never cleanup, but since my backup disk space is somewhat limited, I need it to remove old backups, or someway consolidate the old backups and start a new incremental backup.

Thanks
Gregg

You understand the way it works correctly. ATI produces snapshots of your computer. You need to clean older snapshots after a while, and at that point, you will lose the files of which the last version before being deleted was in the deleted snapshot.
WD Smartware is fine for file backups, but you will eventually run into a similar problem when your backup disk is full.

Experience proves that it is pretty rare that you realize a file has been deleted so late that you don't have a backup of it any longer, but it happens. For my content files, in particular irreplaceable content, I use a combination of sync software with retention of deleted files (not Acronis Sync) and online backups.

so probably my best bet at the moment is have a version chain backup set and just run it probably bi-monthly, so that the backups will probably last over 1 year before the automatic removal. I do realize, like you said, that trying to recover a "old" deleted file that is a few months old is probably unlikely, especially in a home backup environment, but I always like that option. What software are you using for the sync with retention of deleted files? I really like the WD software and I dont see very much backup size growth because I have the version backup set low, I just dont like how its always running in the background.

Thanks
Gregg

I am using SyncBack SE. It has powerful but flexible retention rules. Windows 8 has now File History, and it is pretty good, and features retention rules. I don't think WD software allows for retention rules, so your disk inexorably fills up.
