Problem upgrading to TI 2013
Hi,
I was running TI 2012 b7133. About a month ago, I bought and tried to upgrade to TI 2013. I am having a lot of problem in the upgrade process. This is what happened.
1. First time I tried to upgrade, the install program crashed half way through the upgrade. Upon reboot, W7 (x64) will not boot. It hangs at the welcome screen. Reboot again I get the error message "0xc0000225 - the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible".
2. I restored to the image I made just before the upgrade. Ran upgrade again. This time the upgrade finished properly and Windows ran correctly. However, Windows again will not boot with error 0xc0000225 the next morning when I started the PC.
3. I restored to the good images again and search the internet for "0xc0000225". Found a lot of articles on this error. General consensus is to boot to the Windows installation CD and run repair 3 times.
4. Ran upgrade again and Windows won't boot. Boot to Windows installation CD and ran repair 3 times. Windows still won't boot.
5. Restored again, ran upgrade, Windows won't boot, repair 3 times and system still dead. Gave up and restored to last good image (with TI 2012 installed). System sprang back into life.
This mades me think the problem has something to do with TI 2013. In any case, I left it running for the last 4 weeks with absolute no problem. 4 days ago, I decided to have another go in upgrading to TI 2013. Upgrade completed normally and Windows boots for the next 3 days.
Yesterday, I decided to upgrade to the latest build of Java. The Java upgrade completed properly. But upon reboot, Windows won't boot again (error 0xc0000225). Ran repair 3 times and Windows still won't boot. Restored to the image (with TI 2013 installed) I made just before the Java upgrade and Windows still won't boot. Ran repairs 3 times and PC still dead. Restored to pre-TI 2013 image and Windows started up no problem. Installed Java upgrade again and Windows is still running fine. So reinforce my suspicions that the problem is caused by TI 2013.
PC specifications:
Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 with AMD Phenom II x4 965
16GB memory
3 x WD WD6402AAEX HD (2 connected to the RAID controller and set up as RAID1, 1 connected to SATA controller)
DVD drive
Windows 7 x64 Professional with all critical updates applied
Any suggestions to solve the problem?
Thanks

Hi James,
Thanks for the suggestions but I had no luck. This is what I did:
1. uninstalled TI 2012. As KB34876 says the utility will damage installation of other Acronis products, I uninstalled Disk Doctor as well.
2. ran the cleanup utility. Did not allow utility to reboot.
3. clean the 2 registry keys and rebooted.
4. deleted all files in temp directory.
5. clean install TI 2013.
Install completed properly and able to reboot PC OK. I then re-installed Disk Doctor. However, Windows failed to boot after installing DD. 0xc0000225 error again. Restored to image after TI 2013 install (before Disk Doctor install). Again Windows failed to boot with error 0xc0000225. Restored to prior to TI 2013 and Windows booted without problem

Stephen,
So, installing TI 2013 without Disk Doctor didn't make any difference?
In the Microsoft KB articles, there is mention of Antivirus software and also the hardware APIC controller.
For the first, try booting into Safe mode with tracking enabled and you should be able to see at service or system file Windows is getting palpitations over.
For the APIC controller, make sure your BIOS is up to date and that APIC is enabled.
According to Microsoft there is a further possibility which is an incorrect entry in the BCD. Here is a link to an MS kb article on the problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927391, however I can't get that page to open for me.
You could try running a Windows System Repair disc.

Can you clarify what "Disk Doctor" is?
Did you restore the MBR/track 0 when doing the restore to your system (with 2013 installed, but without "Disk Doctor")?

Hi James,
Sorry, I meant Acronis Disk Director 11.0.2343. Yes, I did restore System Reserve and MBR to point with TI 2013 but without Disk Director. Windows did not start either.
I had another go today. I started from scratch again. Uninstall TI & disk Director, ran cleanup, clean registry key, delete temp files etc. Unlike yesterday, Windows won't boot after clean install of TI 2013.

Were, or are you using the Acronis OS Selector from Disk Director?

I'm at a loss to explain why 2013 does this to your system. It may be a conflict with other software installed on your system, or an incompatibility issue with an installed device driver. This seems strange to me if 2012 was working fine. There are some differences in the disk filter drivers that are used by 2012 and 2013 that could possibly explain this, but I'm not sure.
You may want to open a support case with Acronis to see if they can provide some insight for you.
I would be glad to offer more help through the forums, but am not sure what steps to try since you have exhausted all the steps I would use to get 2013 running reliably on a system. Normally, in my experience, 2013 is easier to get installed and working correctly than 2012 has been. I have many customers that are using 2012 or 2013, and 2012 was a bear!! when first released.
Maybe some others can offer some guidance here for you.

I have notified the Forum moderators of this thread, maybe someone from Acronis will reach out to you about this issue.

Hi Colin,
I tried your suggestion but no luck either. I started from scratch:
1. uninstalled TI 2012 and disk director
2. ran Acronis cleanup utility. Did not reboot
3. clean registry keys then reboot
4. deleted files in temp directory
5. closed firewall, anti-virus and other non-critical programs. Clean install TI 2013. Did not re-install Disk Director.
Windows failed to boot after TI 2013 clean install. As you suggested, I did enable boot logging after Windows failed to boot but not sure what the log is telling me. I have attached it here.
I then ran system repair from Windows installation disk 3 time. It said it found errors and repaired after first run. Run 2 & 3 said cannot repair system. Windows still won't boot. Out of desperation, I restored the System Reserve partition from an imaged made immediate before installing TI 2013. That doesn't work either. Restore back to TI 2012, Windows working fine.

I see that your system is failing to load the Acronis drivers, some of your network drivers and it mentions not loading TrueCrypt.
Did you have Truecrypt installed and enabled on your PC?

Yes. I have a number of partitions encrypted with TrueCrypt

Partition were windows is located is not encrypted. The partitions encrypted with TrueCrypt are partitions containing data and files I archived.

According to the debug log, the Truecrypt driver isn't loading. In the past TrueCrypt and TI haven't always been happy with each other. Try having everything on the drive unencrypted, install 2013 and see if you can boot and TI works.
If it does, encrypt what you need to, and see if TI and Windows behave.

Hi Colin,
I tried again to install TI 2013. Each time, I started from scratch - uninstall TI & disk Director, ran cleanup, clean registry key, delete temp files etc. First time I disabled TrueCrypt. Second and third time I uninstalled TryeCrypt before installing TI 2013 (once with Vmware virtual ethernet adapter disable and once enabled). All three times, Windows will not boot after installation - error 0xc0000225. Restored to pre-TI 2013 and Windows starts without problem. Attached is the boot log for the attempt after uninstalling TrueCrypt with Vmware virtual ethernet adapter enabled.
