Recovery cannot find internal IDE laptop drive
Computer= HP L2000/2005 Special Edition series laptop. 2 GB RAM. 2.2 GHz cpu.
I had a Hitachi 160GB drive in it first and made an image backup of it with Acronis 10. The Hitachi drive died! I used the Acronis boot disk to try to install the image onto a WD 1600BEVE drive, but Acronis could not find the drive. I then used a USB adapter connector to locate the drive, and restored the image to the WD drive that way, but when the WD drive was re-installed in the laptop, the laptop still could not find the drive and would not boot from it. When the drive was hooked up to the USB adapter I could see all the files had been loaded onto the drive and could do anything I wanted to with it, BUT it still would not work when installed in the laptop.
BTW, I have a WD3200BEVE that works just fine in the laptop, but the one I am working on is one I'm trying to repair for an older lady. I need help!!! I have had that WD 160GB in and out of that laptop so many times I've forgotten how many times I actually did it. Two days of work on it have produced nothing. How do I get the recovery boot disk to find the drive and reinstall Windows 8 so it will boot properly?
I sure hope someone can help get this drive working right.
Thank you.

When booted from the TI Recovery CD, have you tried using the "Add disk" tools utility on the replacement disk. The Add Disk option enables you to delete the existing partition s (if any) so the disk will be initialized (mbr) and shown as all unallocated space. No creation of partitions necessary.
Once the above has been done, you do perform disk "disk option" restore of a backup onto the WD.
The only version of TrueImage that supports Windows 8 is version 2013.
If the old computer is old, you will probably not be able to install Windows 8 onto it.
