Win 7 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade

Thread needs solution

I'm thinking of doing a Win 7 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade.
Has anyone used True Image 2013 to move the data and installed programs, files etc. to support that upgrade?
Tnx, Peter

You will be able to copy user data files/folders from a backup.

You will not be able to move installed applications.

Windows applications are not just collections of files, they have many other pieces such as dlls, registry entries, etc. You will have to install the applications into the new OS.

Ditto what Tuttle said. Also, consider -- I doubt that most folks would find much benefit from going form 32 to 64 bit. A lot of software still runs 32 bit mode anyway. So it might not be worth your agony until you are upgrading to a new OS (w8 or whatever comes later) and not just the word size.

Unless he has more than about 3.5 GB of RAM. 32-bit OS can't address more than 4 GB memory, which includes RAM, graphics card, and various other chips. So, if your graphics card is 512 MB and you have 4 GB of RAM, already you're wasting at least half a GB of memory that the OS cannot use. If you want to install 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM, you must have a 64-bit OS or you'll still be using less than 4 GB less whatever the graphics card provides.

I don't disagree. But still, he'll get a little faster in exchange for the agony and probably move to a new OS or new machine within a year anyway--assuming hie doesn't just switch to a pad like so many folks are doing.

I'm not advocating anything one way or that other. I'm just saying it's a lot of work for more mem and a little pick up in speed. It's a personal choice. We've all spent a lot more to get a lot less. ;)
