Recovery Can't Find USB 3.0 Drive

Thread needs solution

When trying to recover my laptop, TI can't find my drive containing the tib backup files. Is there a problem with using 3.0 USB drives? I have 5 versions of my system backed up but I can't see any of them. I have tried using the F11 key when booting up the laptop and selecting the True Image option.

I am running Windows 7 Home Edition x64 on an Acer Aspire laptop.

Don't connect via a hub, a port in a monitor, a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case. See if that works better.

With the Rescue Media, sometimes timing makes a difference when connecting USB drives. Try starting the boot then immediately connecting the drive.

The bootable Rescue Media works fine with my USB 3.0 ports and external hard drives.
It's possible that the Rescue Media doesn't support your specific USB 3.0 controller hardware. If so, advise Acronis Support so they can look at that hardware for a future release.

My USB drive is plugged directly into the USB port on the side of my laptop using the 3.0 cable that came with the drive. I use USB Drive Letter Manager software to define what drive letter is assigned to the drive. My drive is labelled Drive_Y and is always assigned to drive Y in Windows. This drive is plugged in when I power on the laptop. I have tried another 3.0 USB drive that I plugged in after TI recovery was running but the drive never showed up.

See my response above.

Where would I find the specific USB 3.0 controller hardware? I show 10 items listed under the Device Manager for the 3 USB ports on my laptop.

Try waiting until the TrueImage CD has booted and at the home page. Then connect the usb3. If you are able to power up the usb3 first before connecting, then power up before inserting the usb3 cable. You can also try using a usb2 cable and connect to a usb2 port if you have one.
At this point, we just trying to make connections.

Do you have a USB 2.0 port on the laptop? If so, try it.
My Dell laptop has two USB 3.0 ports and one combined eSATA/USB 2.0 port.

The USB drive is powered by the laptop and does not have a power cord. The drive is a WD My Passport 2 TB drive. I'll try waiting until after the CD has booted and I am at the home page before plugging in the drive.

I have 3 ports on the laptop and have tried them all. Not sure how I can determine which ones are 3.0 and which are 2.0 though.

Your manual or the manufacturer's web site should have the details. Also, look in the ports: USB 3.0 ports contain a blue tang; USB 2.0 ports contain a black or maybe white tang, but definitely not blue.
