Basic Clone Operation Fails

Thread needs solution

I only use Acronis True Image 2009 exclusively for cloning. That is all that I do, clone.
I know that when Acronis takes over the computer and I assign source and target and after the reboot I can see on the dos screen the cloning unfolding. Then I need to turn off the computer at completion. Then windows boots into its normal session – all is well. Nothing is lost. I have an image of the hard drive.
Today on a Windows 7 32 bit I attempted to clone the 76GB. During reboot I would see the usual processes unfold and the clone ended within a minute – with a Successful! However the cloning did not occur. I attempted this several times because in the past it would take a second run to clone. After several unsuccessful attempts I uninstalled, and reinstalled. I was unable to clone. What’s to do?
I thought and with reluctance I should upgrade to True Image 2013. Obviously nothing changed in the clone section – so that was the usual. Oh I should say in both 2009 and 2013 I did the auto and then I used manual. Nothing worked.
With 2013 during the reboot to clone phase I got this exceptional error – and that I did not want to see:
Starting Acronis Loader > Fatal Error Boot drive (Partition) not found press enter.
Well its only one partition C drive one hard drive and all the computers in the shop are exactly the same – thus my unable to figureout a fatal error boot drive.
I have never struggled over the years with True Image. We clone to protect our software asset libraries. This should be strait forward. Let me know if there is a solution. I only need to do a basic clone. One hard drive to another hard drive.
Thanks
Chuck

Chuck,

I prefer to clone using the Rescue Media (bootable CD/DVD/USB Flash drive) instead of using the installed Windows version of True Image.

When using the Windows version, the boot loader is modified when performing a clone so that the Acronis Recovery (Linux based) environment is loaded so Windows is not running.

If the support for your system's hardware (in the Linux based environment) is lacking or incomplete, you may not be able to clone properly.

The Rescue Media, Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM) and any pre boot True Image boot loader (used to clone and/or restore to a live OS) are all using the same Linux kernel to run True Image outside of Windows. Problems in one will affect all.

I would highly suggest that you boot to the Rescue Media to verify that it boots okay, and that you can see both your source and target drives correctly.

If you attempt the clone again, save the log and attach it to a future message here for review. This may give an indication as to why the clone is failing.

Running chkdsk on the source drive is a good idea before a clone as well. File system errors can trip up a clone procedure. Be sure to run from an administrative command prompt the command "chkdsk X: /r" (X being your drive letters) to perform both a file system and surface check (/r implies /f to perform the repairs as well).

Additionally, if you perform a disk clone on a Windows 7 system and leave both drives (if internal) connected during first boot, Windows may fail to boot correctly due to having two hard drives with the same disk signature. Be sure to turn off (instead of restarting) the system after cloning, and disconnect or remove the cloned target drive before restarting the system.

I would suggest giving cloning a go from both the 2009 bootable media as well as the 2013 bootable media to check your results before attempting troubleshooting the Windows installed version. If the boot media for 2009 and 2013 don't work correctly when performing the clone, the Windows version will not either, since they are all using the same Linux based environment/drivers. You can download bootable ISO images for Rescue Media (CD/DVD) from your Acronis account. They would be the same as the Windows versions of True Image created disks.

Windows 7 systems sometimes have a hidden System Reserved partition as well as the OS partition, so be sure that your statement about only having one partition is correct.

If the system still has the "Starting Acronis Loader > Fatal Error Boot drive (Partition) not found press enter." message, you can boot to the 2013 Rescue Media and go to the Tools and toggle Activate/Deactivate the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager until it is deactivated to see if the Acronis boot loader is/can be removed successfully. I have used this method quite a few times to rid a system of a failed Acronis Loader install.

I looked here http://www.acronis.com/sitemap/ and unable to locate thus need exact link to Rescue Media, Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM) I have a Windows 7 test machine I can use this on as I cannot afford to compromise a workstation in use.
Thanks!

Chuck,

Sign in to your account at www.acronis.com and register your serial number(s) if you have not done so. Once you have registered your serial numbers, you should be able to see the products that the serial numbers belong to at http://www.acronis.com/my/products/, and there will be links to the bootable media images (ISO) as well as the latest versions of the installer files for your products (if needed).

The ISO files will need to be used to create the CD/DVD media. Do not burn the ISO directly to a disk, It must be used with ISO burning software. Windows 7 has a built in ISO burn feature. Right click on the ISO file to see it. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Burn-a-CD-or-DVD-from-an-IS…

I also used ATIH (2012) only to clone C-drives, typically 500-GB SATA HDDs. Happily, the clone app worked well on my elderly XP machine and I did monthly clones, always booting up on the new copy. Unfortunately, the main board on my XP system went bad, so I recently rebuilt using a Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP Win7 main board, with Intel i5 core and Win7 Pro. The clone app does not work on this new system.
I ran chkdsk against both source and destination HDDs - both reported ok.. The destination HDD was checked on another system and appeared fine. I tried numerous times from both Win7 and the rescue media, always with the same results: the clone process starts; the reboot panel splashes, Win7 shuts down and the reboot begins; the Acronis loader header appears and data starts streaming, then stops after the following...

Using/Lib/Modules/auth-rpcgss.ko
Using/Lib/Modules/locked.ko
Using/Lib/Modules/nfs.ko

All C:\ HDD activity light ceases. After setting inactive for more than 30 minutes, I press the reset button and the system reboots into Win7.

Any ideas? I get very nervous without a backup HDD.

TIA ..O

PS: I uninstalled 2012 and Plus Pack, then DL-ed a retitled Family Pack & Plus Pack. installed both ok. The previous occurred after the re-install reboot.

I'M very frustrated also !! was cloning from 2012 went to 2013 first the download would not install, then after deleting calling live support it installed went to clone and wala goes into reboot and switches my drive letters !!! tells me no ntsf system. Point is I paid for the up grade and now the program dosen't work and the solutions say unplug your usb devices or do this or do that B.S. B.S. !!! I'm running win xp with sata hds have been for a few years changed nothing but would like a master copy of my hard drive which I cannot do any more. I'm man enough to admit that I not an expert by any means about computers and the issues that come up when you make a mistake and push the wrong button or delete the wrong file but with so many complaints about the cloning feature not working why isn't there a fix for it already.

UPDATE: I just successfully cloned the C-drive using the 2012 ISO DL disc. :-) The source & destination HDDs were installed in the case.

When booted from the ISO CD, True Image page loaded but the mouse did not work, nor did the keyboard. After hitting Enter, the keyboard arrow keys activated, I arrow keyed to Tools menu, arrow keyed to Clone, my SATA drives showed, I selected source and destination, and the splash screen showed. I arrow keyed to and selected "shutdown" after, then the clone op ran to completion and turned off the system.
I disconnected the source C: drive, reconnected the cloned C: drive, closed the case and booted up. All was well, except I had to reset my monitor size. All seems to work as expected.

Thank you, James, for all the info. I'm back in a comfortable place.

Next clone time, I will try the USB connected HDD method.
