Clone? hhd to ssd w/o changing alignment

Thread needs solution

I want to transfer my ide hhd to an ssd on an xp pro sp3 system.
The ssd is in an external usb caddy.

I had to partition the ssd using my win7 machine to set the align=1024. The diskpart utility (v5.1.3565) in xp did not recognize the align argument.

So my ssd is partitioned, aligned, and formated. Now I want to clone the hhd to the ssd w/o changing the formating.

Do I have........ to make a backup of my hhd? It will be my backup after I transfer everything. I only have 2 usb and no internal cd.

Can I do something with just the ssd (external caddy) using 1 usb?

You cannot clone a partition, only an entire disk. Normally, ATI should clone and adjust the alignment when cloning to an SSD. Cloning should be done from the recovery CD. When you do clone, you cannot ensure the alignment is respected. So you clone, then you check the alignment. If the alignment is not right, you will have to backup and restore:
