Backup to 3TB External HDD hangs (Bootable Media)

Thread needs solution

I have an external Desktop Buffalo 3TB HDD.

When using the bootable media (Via CD or USB), I can see the 3TB HDD and all of its folders from the Acronis GUI, and can initiate a backup to a location on the HDD with no problems. However the backup hangs shortly after starting the partition image creation and does not progress. The HDD access LED on the drive indicates continuous read/write activity, but the HDD LED on the PC seems top indicate noting is being read from the source partition. If I cancel the backup the cancel does not work, and I must forcefully power down the PC.

If I explore the External HDD in Windows 8, I can see the destination image filename in the expected location with a filesize of 0 bytes. This file can not be deleted, and a windows disk check and repair must be performed to correct the Filesystem errors on the external HDD.

Notes:
(1) I can backup to this drive without any problems using the Windows 8 Acronis online/realtime backup executable.
(2) A backup of the same machine using the same bootable media to a smaller 1.5GB External HDD is successful.

I have read many posts about problems with Acronis and 3TB HDD's, however it seems I have got further into the process (At least I can see the HDD partitions and folders).

Any Ideas?

I use a 3 TB USB drive, but mine is a WD My Book, as my destination all the time, on multiple computers. I have no issues with it.

TonkleChicken,
Examine the 3TB iin more detail. How many partitions? If more than one, what are the partition sizes?
Is this disk partitioned as GPT or MBR?

It is GPT, with a single primary partition configured as a "Basic" volume formatted NTFS.

The unit is a plugpack powered Buffalo DriveStation HD-LB3 with USB3 IF

I am wondering if the issue may be a problem specific to a Buffalo Drive Station. This drive enclosure has an auto power feature, and probably uses a WD Green HDD internally.

I will try a firmware update and report back.

Was the drive formatted using Buffalo interface or via Windows? Not sure if it would make any difference. Did you use quick format for full format. If the former there may be issues with 'as-you-go' partition formatting. This is mere speculation on my part.

I formatted it under Windows using the default quick format option.

The firmware upgrade had no effect, so I may give a complete partition MBR/GPT wipe and a full format a go.

Full formatting of a 3TB HDD will take quite some time. I'm not sure if I have ever done it with a 3TB HDD. I have done it with a troublesome 2TB HDD.

I had issues with a WD Green 3TB drive that I initially had MBR selected (one of my seniors moment) and subsequent change to GPT did not work properly. This may have been in part due to a misbehaving USB 3 driver on my Asus MB (the drive was in a USB 3 docking station). The particular MB was so bad I vowed never to chose Asus again. Not sure why I added this comment about changing from MBR to GPT.

In the process of backing up my 3TB drive so I could re-initialise and reformat it, I observed that about 5% of the files on the volume would not copy (With SyncToy).

Thinking back I think I may have left the HDD factory formatted, (GPT-NTFS) so I suspect there was a problem with the Out-of-the-box formatting. Either that or something (Possibly even Acronis) has broken the NTFS directories. (A disk check had found and fixed errors)

I have now reinitialised the HDD (GPT) and quick reformatted a single 3TB partition and all is OK now.
