Acronis 2013 boot CD cannot read USB external Harddrive

Thread needs solution

Hi,

My Rescue Boot CD does not recognise external USB 3.0 Harddrive.

It does recognise USB Stick.

Under Windows 7 it works well.

Is this a Boot disk driver problem (with the Linux kernel ) or what?

I appreciate all help.

Impossible for us to know, as you provided little detail. For example:

what version of ATI?
what type of external HD?
how are you connecting it? Directly to rear port on PC, or via a hub, or monitor, etc.?
does the Rescue Media recognize the drive if connected to a USB 2.0 port?
is the external HD recognized by Windows?
is that USB stick recognized by the Rescue Media when connected to USB 3.0 port?

Did you create the recovery cd from the installed program? If your external drive is larger than 2TB it is probably formatted as GPT and all recovery media created from build 6514 of 2013 will not recognize GPT partitions. Try downloading the iso from under your account online. Sign into your account, click my products and downloads, select your acronis 2013 product, click the bootable media tab, and download and burn the new iso. It is listed as 6514 but is actually build 6528.

Hi everyone,

what version of ATI?

Acronis True Image 2013 Build 5614

what type of external HD?

Intenso 500 GB USB 3.0

how are you connecting it? Directly to rear port on PC, or via a hub, or monitor, etc.?

USB port on the front of the PC (I also tried the rear port)

does the Rescue Media recognize the drive if connected to a USB 2.0 port?

No.

is the external HD recognized by Windows?

Yes

is that USB stick recognized by the Rescue Media when connected to USB 3.0 port?

Yes, the USB stick is also recognised by USB Port 2.0 with the Boot CD

Hi Joey,

Did you create the recovery cd from the installed program?

Yes

No it only 500GB.

It's at least worth trying with the latest build of the Rescue Media. You may download its ISO from your Acronis.com account (once you've entered your licence serial #). You may also download the latest version of the ATI Windows application.

BTW, I would have thought you were far too busy running Germany to post here. :)

Hi everyone,
I want to keep you posted.

I have good news.
I ordered an external USB 3.0 Toshiba Harddrive which arrived this morning.

The Acronis boot CD can read the files from the Toshiba Harddrive !!

I dont know WHY the Toshiba works and the Intenso did not

However the Toshiba has a NTFS format
and the Intenso a FAT32 Format.

I tried the boot CD out and it works fine.

any ideas why?

It's possible that the Intenso has some interface or controller hardware that is uncommon and not covered by ATI's Rescue Media. Disk format has nothing to do with it.

Try reinitializing the Intenso hard drive with True Image's Add New Disk feature. This worked for me with couple of usb hard drives that weren't being detected by the Acronis 2014 boot cd. With 2013 and earlier boot cds, they would show up as removable media in the left hand pane. After using Add New Disk from under Tools and Utilities, they were properly recognized by all recovery media. You'll need to backup all data off the Intenso drive first. Be very careful and make sure you select the correct drive because all data will be wiped from the device.
