Cloning bootable 500GB partition on 2TB HD to 200GB HD so 200GB is bootable

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I know this is hard, if not impossible, but . . .

I have a 2TB hard drive divided into four partitions of 500GB partitions. The first partition, C, is the boot partition with my programs. Partition D has my data. Partitions E and F are presently unused.

I want to copy/clone the C partition to a 200GB hard drive that will be bootable in the event of a problem with my 2TB hard drive. I've tried doing this with Acronis True Image 2013 but can't seem to make the 200GB drive bootable.

Is there any way I can do this with True Image 2013? Is there some way I can create a master boot record on the 200GB hard drive after I've cloned the C Drive?

Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

1. You do not state which version of Windows.

2. Have you checked to see if there are any non-lettered or hidden partitions which appear in Windows Disk Manager?

3. Understand that in Acronis, cloning is at disk level so you cannot use the clone utility to clone only the Drive C so cloning is NOT possible with TrueImage.

4. Acronis TrueImage excels at backup and restore or recovering an image so it could be possible to create a backup of C (plus any non-lettered or hidden partitions) and that backup could be restored onto a 200GB hard driveto achieve the "clone" you wish to produce.

Assuming of course that the current C has used space of much less than 200GB. Whether you can get it bootable is questiionalble but certainly a possiblility. Size of current disk & used space of C could be an issue.

The 2013 TrueImage Recovery CD could be used to perform the disk option backup of C plus any other non-lettered boot partitions. This backup file would need to be stored in some other location--such as a usb external disk. Once the backup completed, then the 2 TB disk could be removed and the 200 disk installed in its place.

Once the restore completes (using the TI Recovery CD) , you would need to use the Windows Installation CD or Windows Recovery CD (createable on most computers) and perform a Startup Repair on the 200GB disk. If or once successful, then you could remove the 200 and put the 2 tb back in its place. Only one of the disks could be attached at the same time to prevent drive letter and other boot issues.

Sometimes, the program has prevented a restore from a large disk onto a smaller disk but this again is sometime you will have to try. If you already have 170GB of used space on the drive C, the program will probably refuse the restore from the very beginning.

This is not "a piece of cake" if you have not had experience with TrueImage performing backups and restores but "probably" doable.
Part of the restore process would be to make sure you allow the 1mb of free space before the first partiton.
