Clone with Source Drive in External USB Enclosure

Thread needs solution

The user manual states:
"8.4.1 General information
You might find that your hard disk does not have enough space for the operating system and installed applications, preventing you from updating your software or installing new applications. In this case, you have to transfer the system to a higher-capacity hard disk.
.
For best results, install the target (new) drive where you plan to use it and the source drive in another location, e.g. in an external USB enclosure."
.
I may be missing something here, but having the current operating system with Acronis anywhere but in the boot drive position begs numerous issues including changing the BIOS. What am I missing here?
Thanks.

Martin,

This is assuming you are using the recovery CD, not starting from within Windows.

Cloning of a drive that contains the OS and system files should always be carried out using the recovery CD. The only BIOS settings that might need to be looked at are.

1. Boot order - CD should be first.

2. If Secure Boot and UEFI are enabled you will need to disable Secure Boot and possibly set UEFI to legacy mode. These settings will need to be returned to default when wanting to boot back into Windows.

I have successfully used this executable load of Acronis on this SSD (Corsair) to successfully clone my C:\ to another SSD (OCZ). The OCZ failed completely after 10 days. Now I am attempting to clone this SSD (Corsair) again to another identical SSD (Corsair) in order to have a backup boot drive. I initialized the new SSD to have a GUID partition instead of MBR. Acronis later warns me that it will rewrite it to the cloned drive as a MBR just before clone execution. I also formatted it (NTFS) in frustration (not needed) when it didn’t work the first time. When I select ‘restart’ during the clone procedure when Acronis starts loading, the following error flashes on the screen:

Acronis
Loading. Please wait…
no raid disks
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while…
/bin/ipwatchd: error while loading shared libraries: libnet.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such f………
Setup AVD devices

Then I get an error message: “Acronis Bootable agent is waiting for removable devices.”

I select wait and the error comes back. There are no removable devices? So I select don’t wait and the machine restarts without cloning the disk. Please help me understand how to successfully clone the new SSD.
Thanks.

I too have the same issue. Using the recovery disk doesnt work either - it still has the same message as listed by the op above. Just spent money to buy Acronis to clone ,y windows disk and it doesnt work using either method (clone disk in windows or clone disk off bootable media). Why is this happening? Should I have just used free software to clone the disk and saved myself $60?

The message attachment in post #2 is NOT an error message. It is an infomation message as it is a designed for multii manufacturers.

You ony have a problem if the boot does not continue and load the True Image program.

All restores or clones of the system disk is best done when booted from the TI Recovery CD and the recommended placement is the new disk to be installed inside the computer.

If an attempt is made and fails, the botched data should be removed by using the "Add new disk" option found in the Tools menu of the TI Recovery CD. If the disk is new and pristine, the "Add new disk" mayalso be needed. Prior partitioning and formatting not necessary. Target disk can be all "unallocatd".

Pat,

I honestly can't remember the issue but luckily I DID document the solution...Unfortunately my embedded jpgs don't post...but the steps are on the Acronis Web Site. So you first have to make an Acronis Bootable Media.

Solution
If you are going to do system disk cloning, it recommended to do it from Acronis Bootable Media.
Cloning from Acronis Bootable Media

1. Create Acronis Bootable Media. See True Image 2013 Creating Acronis Bootable Media;

2. Boot your computer from Acronis Bootable Media and select Tools&Utilities -> Clone disk:

3. Select the Automatic mode to have your old disk's partitions automatically and proportionally resized to fit the new disk:

4. Select your old hard disk as the source disk and click Next:

5. Select the new hard disk as the destination disk and click Next:

6. If the destination disk is partitioned, click OK to allow the product to erase all data from the destination disk (required to do the cloning):

7. Review the operation on the Summary window and click Proceed to start the cloning:

8. When the cloning completes, shut down the system and remove one of the hard drives.

Ok I actually got it to work before I read this. The thing I had to do to get it to work was:

1. create the bootable media

2. remove the old boot drive I want to clone from the pc and put it in my external usb 3.0 dock

3. place the new drive (the one I want to be the new replacement boot drive) in the number 1 sata slot (it was previously in spot 4)

4. start pc, changing the boot options to boot from cd in bios

5. exit bios, system reboots and then it goes into the acronis menu eventually (booting from the acronis bootable cd i created earlier) and you can select clone disk option

6. from there follow the prompts and in around 30 minutes (that is how long it took me to clone a just over 400/500gb drive to a 1tb drive) it is all good.

7. i ticked the option to shut down pc after cloning so I could remove the old boot disk.

8. I rebooted (changed option to boot from cd to boot from hard disk) and what do you know it worked!

Not as easy as I had hoped as i thought the software would take more of the effort out of cloning a disk than it did.

Thanks all.
