Backup fails with msg "application is not installed correctly"

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Our backup of one vm with a Server 2012 R2 installed (DC & SQL Server)
always fails. I reinstalled the vmware Tools as Acronis suggests but it ends in the same
result. The Task is set to cut the transaction protocol of our SQL server, another Task with
the same configuration on a different Server (Exchange & DC) backups successfully.

By the way the vm snapshot with the Option to quiese the vm works.

Acronis is installed directly on the hypervisor as separate vm

Here is the cryptic log (unfortunatley in German) message i get:

Hi Sebastian,

It looks like you have Acronis Backup Agent installed either inconsistently or from old build inside the problematic VM. Have you extracted the corresponding .msi from the main installation package and installed it inside that VM? Note that this component is required _only_ if you have UAC enabled in the guest OS of the backed up VM, otherwise it should be uninstalled. You should check the Programs and Features on this VM and uninstall Acronis Backup Agent (if installed). After that re-try the operation. If it still doesn't help please send me the full log from the backup attempt, so that I can check and advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

I'd like to summarize the outcome we've got (big thanks to Sebastian for great help and assistance during troubleshooting):

The problem was caused by missing SQLVssWriter entry in "vssadmin list writers" outputs - this caused the application check script to fail. However in fact the SQL VSS Writer was installed inside the system and was running properly - so this inconsistency was causing the original problem.

This issue is described in the following thread:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/batala/archive/2011/08/01/sqlserverwriter-missi…

So we have changed the user under which SQL VSS Writer service is running from LocalSystem to domain admin one and the SQL VSS writer properly appeared in "vssadmin list writers" outputs which resolved the original problem. Another possible solution was to grant LocalSystem account with SQL admin permissions (should also do the trick).

Thank you.
