Windows 7 Recovery--System Drive Letter problem

Thread needs solution

This has been driving me crazy...

I backed up my Windows 7 system drive C: (I did a full drive backup) on another internal drive (D:). This is a desktop PC.

Then I removed the system drive and replaced it with a new SSD in the same position (Drive 0).

I booted from the ATI recovery disk and restored the disk (I didn't select MBR and Track 0).

[For whatever its worth, the restore application won't let me expand the size of the partition on the recovery disk. The slider remains fixed to the size of my backup partition, even though the recovery disk is larger. So, it says Free space: 1 MB before, Partition size 280GB, Free Space: 120 after. I wonder why.]

At any rate, when the transfer is done, Windows believes that my new drive is E: instead of C:. It sort of halfway boots, but it's a mess.

I would be extremely grateful for a clue! Thank you so much.

Consider using the guide shown in my signature link 3, item #1 inside that link.

YOu will need to use the Add disk feature so you can clean the new target disk back to all unallocated.

Do restore the mbr/track0 and do restore the "Recover Disk signature".

After the restore, first boot with only the newe disk attached. Cable to old disk must be disconnected.

Thank you, Grover!

It was the mbr/track0 thing that got my drive back on track. Unfortunately, I did this before I read your post so I skipped the Add disk part. But on the fortunate side I also own Paragon partition software, so I just merged the partitions when I was done.

My former C drive was getting lots of errors and may have been very close to a major meltdown. ATI totally saved me.
