VSS freezes computer

Thread needs solution

My diagnostic software is telling me that VSS is the cause of my computer constantly freezing-up. (Once or twice a day!)
A quick search on the Internet shows page after page that others have had this same problem when using Acronis True Image (I have 2013).
It looks like there might be a Microsoft version of VSS.
Should I try that?

Hi Steve,

MS VSS is part of windows.  Acronis installs its own version of VSS.  It is possible for two or more versions of VSS to coexist.  To see what's installed on your PC, you can run the following command from a elevated command prompt.

vssadmin list providers

You will see an output like this:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\windows\system32>vssadmin list providers
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001-2013 Microsoft Corp.

Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
   Provider type: System
   Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
   Version: 1.0.0.7

We know little about your environment besides the version of ATIH you are using.  What diagnostic software is telling you Acronis VSS is the problem?

Often, problems like these can be solved easily, by updating your software to the latest build for the version you own.  It is also possible to apply specific updates based on the build of ATIH or version of windows.  You will find a great deal of information in regards to VSS in the knowledgebase.

Are you getting a specific error like "Failed to create VSS snapshot " when performing a back up task?  This might help us pin point the nature of your issue.
