Start button and task bar erased after scheduled backup.

Thread needs solution

I have Win 7 64 bit home on my computer. My USB backup was getting overloaded so got a 1TB Seagate hard drive. Used Acronis free download to trial backing up. It worked ok but would not allow Bitdefender 'safe pay' for banking sites to run. Unfortunately, I probably didn't take the hint. I installed full version of Acronis 2014.
Backups that I initiated got a 'completed successfully' . However, the first scheduled backup would not allow the computer to shut down. (don't have an Insomnia programme that I know of).
Switched computer off manually after several hours. Next day it booted up with only my screensaver and an Excel icon visible. I rebooted in safe mode, I had screen saver and all programme icons but no task bar or start button.
Used windows recovery tool and now remain stuck in a repair cycle, getting message error (0x8000fff) failed to extract the file (D:\) from restore point.
Now Stuck in safe mode.
Repair disc loads files but that is all that happens.
Windows advice to start> run > enter " msconfig" is of little use when you don't have a start button.
Any ideas apart from a complete reinstall of WIN 7 ?

If you have a successful backup, then restore the backups. My signature link 3 below, item 3 inside that link.

Tell us more about the method being used to shutdown the computer after a backup.
If using a TrueImage method, you may want to consider alternate methods rather than a forced shutdown.

My signature link #1 below, item 3-RA inside that lnk.

Thanks Grover,
The back ups that "I initiated" were labelled successful by acronis. I really did not have time to check them. I had noticed that Acronis came with a scheduled Thursday automatic backup. So, 2 days after installation (Thursday) it appears to have gone into action. As per normal, at end of the day, I used desktop Start>shutdown , I then had a blue screen with message along the lines of: "process is occurring, please do not shut down". after about 4 more hours I figured something was wrong tried to use on/off button on the computer( which did nothing ) so I killed the mains power.

I have tried to use the reboot USB that I made, but it does not work. I cannot get back to desktop , Im stuck in safe mode with only recovery tools; Win 7 on (D:) and Bitdefender rescue mode. No start button etc so cannot access programmes.
Cheers

Try using the Windows safe mode "restore to last known good confuguration"

did that , Also tried earlier configurations. Latest configuration only one successful, well I got a message that it restored successfully,???? but system remains stuck in the same safe mode/rescue cycle
