Keep differential backups?

Thread needs solution

I have a full backup made a little over a year ago, and more than a dozen differential backups made since then. 1- Do I have to keep all the differential backups, or just the latest one (and the full, of course)?
2- If just the latest, can I set up the program so that after it has made a differential backup, it erases the previous one?

Thanks for any help.

One mistake too frequently made is the too quick deletion of what is perceived to be "old backups". I would encourage you to add even a second storage disk so you can expand your safety recovery zone.

Any deletion of backup files must be done from withiin the progam. This link will show you how to use the Acronis Backup Explorer to perform the deletion. As the backup type is differential, each diff contains all the changes that existed at the time of dif creation. So, yes, your ful plus the last diff is the only files you need with 2014 to perform a restore. I personally wouold not delete them all for safety sake. After using the program to perform the delete, I would suggest you perform a manual validation of that chain to make sure what you are keepiing is still non-corrupt.

No, there is no option for an older diff file to be replaced by a newer diff file. Such a function would need to be done manually--using the program delete function as desribed above.

You do have an backup scheme option (see below) which would enable you to have an automatic cleanup of old chains after the program reaches your preset limit of how many chains you wish to keep. A chain being 1 full plus whatever number of diff files which is dependant upon that full.
This link shows how. You can adjust the number of diff to keep and adjust the number of chains (store no more than
X) to keep before automatic deletion begins.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains with automatic cleanup. The 2-2 is user choice.

GH14. Custom Differential Backup Scheme . 6 Diff, Keep 4 chains. & fold
