Clone or backup/restore?

Thread needs solution

Hello - advice please!

1. I am currently running partitions C (Win 7), D (applications) and E data off a single SSD drive.

2. I wish to transfer the partitions D and E to a newly-installed hard drive, to free up all space on C for the OS.

3. Should I "Clone" or "Backup/Restore" the D and E partitions to the new HDD, bearing in mind the integration of the apps. on D into the system files?
Is it possible to "Clone" only the non-active partitions (D,E) from the SDD?

Your help and guidance on the procedure would be much appreciated - thank you.

You may not Clone only specified partitions. Clone is all or nothing, and entails risk. We always recommend backup and restore.

Thank you tuttle for your advice. I guess that's what I'll do then....

Have a good day,
George

Note you will have to be careful when you move your partitions so that the D partition (the one with the apps) keeps the same name upon reboot and restore. Don't reboot the computer with the SSD installed and the new disk installed.

- backup the D&E partitions,
- remove the SSD from the computer,
- boot on the recovery CD,
- restore the D&E partitions to the other disk
- Use the Windows installation DVD, and use the command prompt to verify the (a) the content is there, (b), using DISKPART, that the partitions have the same letter as before.
- then disconnect the content disk,
- connect the SSD
- boot the computer and delete the D&E partitions from the SSD
- reboot the computer with both disks and verify that the new content disk has the correct partitions letters.
- note you can use a tool like EASUS partition manager to move the partitions from one disk to another. Still use Acronis to have a backup of the SSD prior to start using the partition manager.

The above is similar to what I want to do.
I have a new PC with Win 7 on a 260 SSD and a terabyte HD for data. How do I back up the complete SSD to the HD so that I can boot from the HD in the event of an SSD failure.
I am contemplating partitioning the HD to facillate the backup.
Any help gratefully received.

You wouldn't do this. You can backup the SSD to the HD. If your SSD fails, you would either restore the backup to the SSD, or purchase a new disk, then restore.

Thank you Pat L for your clear and helpful advice - I will follow this scrupulously!
