Acronis TI freezes in middle of recovery

Trying to recover C drive (system) when Windows would not load beyond splash screen. Used Acronis Rescue CD. Got as far as "New location" selection and it froze. Arrow turned into a cartoon finger-pointing, and program ceased to respond. Tried this three times. Always freezes at this point. I have valid backups on two different USB HDDs, but it froze with both. Yet I have restored the system before on this computer using the same USB HDDS with no problem.
