Wierd Behavior During Backups

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I am seeing some wierd behavior when I create backups that cause be some concern about the integrity of my existing backups.

FYI I keep all my backups in dedicated folders on my internal hard drive. I periodically connect an external hard drive and copy the backups to this hard drive which I keep in a separate location from the computer. I will refer to this as the remote hard drive. I have been doing this successfully for ages. I also do daily backups to another external hard drive which stays connected to my computer

(1) ATI has been creating subfolders with the names of previous backup schemes. These folders are empty. If I delete the folders, they get recreated. I have long since delete the backups and the schemes, but it still happens.

(2) Yesterday I copied my backups to the remote hard drive and removed it. Today I was surprised to see that one of my regularly scheduled backups failed. The error message said one of the destinations could not be found. I checked the backup scheme and in effect it said that there are two destinations: the folder I originally designated on my computer when I created the scheme and the folder on the remote drive. I never modified the destination or the settings of the scheme. Somehow it ATI modified it by itself causing the backup to fail.

I have since cloned all the schemes and started all over. But I am worried that the previous backups may have been damaged or are inaccessible.

Thanks

Have you disabled the automatic "Scan for Backkups" at startup? This might avoid all listings of old backups.

If you have tasks on your main menu which you do not want, then open each task and use the "remove from list" option.

One thing you can try is to edit the registry and change the "ScanCompuaterAtStartup" from a "1" (enabled) to a "0" (disabled) setting

If using Win7 64 bit, you may find the registry settings inside
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Settings

http://forum.acronis.com/sites/default/files/mvp/user285/guides/startup…

Upon completion, you will then need to remove each of the unwanted task singly via the use the "remove from the list" option located inside each task.

Hi,

First, how do I disable the `Scan for Backups'? I cannot find it in the menu. I find it a bit odd that I need to do this through the registry. Why is it on and should it be on?

All my tasks are normally scheduled. I have tasks that are active and others that I have turned off because I have kept old backups and want to keep the task definition. It is impossible to tell if any of these tasks are associated with a scan at startup. I have tried to delete some of the older tasks. Sometimes this works and sometimes ATI hangs up.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I cloned all my backups and started over. Some work, some don`t, though they all worked before. The log file for one of the big ones that work gives a lot of obscure error messages including:

Error occurred while backing up. (0x40019)
Tag = 0xCE542E14DA203B82
Error occurred while backing up. (0x40019)
Tag = 0xCE542E14DA203AC3
Error occurred while reading the file. (0x40001)
Tag = 0x61F1883FE50B0A5E
Failed to read the snapshot. (0x10C45A)
Tag = 0x14181C22EF45AD5B
Unknown status. (0x9)
code = 8)
Tag = 0x2AACB7B2AB852AC
Not enough storage is available to process this command (0xFFF0)
code = 80070008)
Tag = 0xBD28FDBD64EDB8C3

What does this mean? This worked fine previously. I checked the error in the data base and of course there is nothing in the database. And I do have enough disk space. I have attache the log for reference.

I see lots of events in the logs from the ATI console that says `'scanning local disks for archives..`` and not much else. What is this? There are also some errors from the ATI console that say `failed to obtain device bus type`.... what is this?

There seems to be a lot of wierd stuff going on that was not there previously.

Thanks for any help.

Robert

Here is how to disable the scan in 2014.

AGH-23. 31895: Stop TrueImageHome Startup Search for Backups

It it were me, I would uninstall 2014 and reinstall and start fresh.

Thanks Grover. Reinstalling is probably a good idea. Some of my schemes have automatic cleanup enabled. I have noticed in the log files that the schemes are trying to consolidate backups with different names on different drives that I never requested and that the scheme should not even know about. So I guess the database is screwed up.

One very important question.. I have always meant to ask. If I reinstall and start fresh, I will loose all my schemes and will need to recreate them. However can I still recover the backup itself without the scheme - just in case something goes wrong? The main thing I want to make sure about is that the backup itself is functional.

Thanks

Robert

------------------------------------
Starting over does not destroy your old backups.
Yes, new tasks will be needed but since you have issues the old ones, not reusing the same task is probably the best thing.
Use different folder names and different tib names for your new task.
There is no need for the old backups to be listed on your menu
The TI Recovery CD is the tool to use for restroing a backup.
Finding the old backups is as easy as browsing your backup storage and selecting the one of choice.
Here are some suggested backup scheme option selections. Choose one based on your type of backup.

Thanks, but unfortunately a few more questions...

(1) I see how to disable `startup search for backups`, but what precisely does that do (or not do if disabled)? In other words what is the purpose of the search for backups on startup? I looked in help and cannot see anything.

(2) If I understand correctly, remove from list does not actually delete the backup (ie the tib), so it is still taking up disk space and is still in the database. I tried to delete some backups using the ` gear`in the window for the task and it takes forever...in fact never completed.

Robert

Normally, an enabled scan for backup will scan for new backup files each time you start the program, such as when a different disk is attached.

A disabled scan is supposed to not look for new backup files upon starting of program.

Removing a task from the database only removes it from sight and prevents any backup execution.
As you noted, no space is saved. The best solution for saving space is the backup scheme cleanup scheme as in the last post.

There have been other reports of deletion freezing.

Ok, so I reinstalled and everything seems to be working...so far. I am no longer getting wierd notifications from ATI trying to consolidate backups across drives that I did not request.

I am still getting some message in the logs concerning nonstop backup and console messages. Is this normal? Please see attached.

Thanks for your help.

I don't use Non-stop or Sync Agent so I have both services stopped and disabled.
This causes me to get error messages that the services are disabled (which I know) so I just ignore this type message.
You could try that and see if these specific error messages go away.
