Migration From WHS2011 to WSE2012R2 Can I Use Acronis Backup? Seems Like No is Answer...
I own multiple licenses for Acronis 2014 and have used the programs for backups (and restores!) successfully for many years. Until now my machines have been on a network with a WHS2011 Server. This does not use a domain controller. I am now using a new server with WSE2012R2 installed and my machines are now on a Domain. Everything is working fine. However...although WSE2012R2 does client backups successfully, I needed to increase the size of my boot drive, and thought I would use Acronis to do so (as I have many times before). It doesn't seem to work anymore. I tried to do this from within Win7 and the computer freezes as it tries to load Acronis with a line of linux gibberish. I tried to do it with an Acronis Boot Disk, and it too freezes. (I don't have Premium BTW). I cannot remove the Acronis boot loader from startup which is mostly just annoying
Am I out of luck? If so seems I'll just have to rely on Server restores for migration.

Many thanks for your advice. Yes it is a Win 7 Client machine I am trying to "upgrade" with a larger SSD (256G to 512 GB). I'll try your suggestion. Right now I am stuck in download hell trying to get the WinPE environment from MS to put on the server so I can try a full system restore using the server's backup of the client, then booting from the WinPE on a USB stick. That is supposed to work, but nothing is either easy or straightforward on a MS Server. I'm glad this is not an emergency where a drive has failed. I can take my time and "experiment"
Is there a fundamental limitation to using the Acronis Backup on a Domain-joined client? The server seems pretty protective of the clients; It seemed to think there was a security breach the first time I tried to do a restore on the client and then when that failed, booted back up.

Hi,
Limitation, there is none I am aware of, so no. You will get the same security identifier in the restore that existed on the domain joined client previously, so "no break in the trust relationship" occurs.

Well still no joy in Mudville...I downloaded the latest image from Acronis and burned a CDROM. It booted OK but the machine freezes (or nothing seems to happen) after the screen goes black and the small Acronis logo appears as well as a blinking cursor. Things stop loading from the CDROM, then the cursor stops blinking and nothing happens. Unless I need to wait a long, long time. No drive access flashes etc.,

Well I solved the problem. Windows restore worked no better than Acronis 2014. What worked PERFECTLY was the Free version of EaseUS's product. Now if I can just get the Acronis loader off my SSD.
