Help in migrating single HDD with OS (Win 7) to RAID-0 setup

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am new to the forum and just recently got Acronis True Image 2010 Home (+ Plus Pack) so I could not say that I am a power user of this software.
When migrating my HDD with OS to a RAID setup I ran into some problems and would appreciate the help. After several restoring tries I wonder what is the correct way to restore the old disc image to a new setup with no issues?

Details of what I want and what I tried are described below.
I read through all relevant topics (including Grovers Index of accumulated wisdom) but could not quite find the correct solution.

Old setup:
********
250GB SATA HDD with 2 partitions (C: is windows 7 x64, and D: is data partition)
1TB SATA HDD used for storage and backup (this is where I created Disc Image of the first HDD). This drive is configured as dynamic drive.

BIOS of the system is configured to use ACPI for SATA drives (and not IDE)
Windows is working properly with all drivers installed.

Migration goal:
************
500GB RAID-0 (containing migrated C: and D: partitions from old HDD)
1TB SATA HDD for storage
250GB SATA HDD for backup

What I have done so far:
- Booted with Acronis Rescue disc and created full disc image of first HDD.
- Validated the disc image
- Shut down the system and install new HDD's, disconnected old HDD
- Created RAID-0 Volume (2 drives with 250GB each into one stripping 500GB volume)
- Changed access method in BIOS from ACPI to RAID

Try 1:
- Booted with Acronis Rescue disc
- I chose Rescue My Disc, rescue discs and partitions, then I browsed and selected disc image created in above step.
- I sorted the partitions using sorting by start position, I chose whole disc (all partitions are selected MBR, C:, and D:)
- I selected RAID-0 volume as destination
- There was no screen showing partition resize (not quite big issue since I decided later that I will use remaining unallocated space to create one more partition on this disc, but anyway this screen is missing for some reason)
- I left unchecked "copy disc signature"
- In options I left unchecked Validate backup
- Clicked on Proceed

- Rebooted
- Windows started to boot but after brief BSOD, then it restarted. Message I got (after I let the system to try to reboot) on Windows is unable to boot screen, error message is disc inaccessible.
It writes about that this message it a result if some major HW or SW change. It suggests to boot with Windows install CD and choose Repair.
- I did that and it detected errors on MBR, offering to fix it. I chose that the system tries to fix the error and it offered to reboot.
- Rebooted and the same error waited for me.

Try 2:
- Booted with Acronis Rescue disc
- Did the same as above but this time I selected Acronis Universal Restore on screen where I can choose to restore whole discs & partitions or files & folders
- I also checked "Copy disc signatures" after choosing which partitions to restore
- Clicked on Proceed

- Rebooted
- Windows started (hurray!!) found new hardware (RAID) and offered to reboot
- Rebooted
- Audio drivers were not present (this can be expected as it is documented in Acronis Universal Restore, all other drivers seam to be installed and working. I have not checked in more details)
- Network is enabled but all IP addressing setup is lost. Not a big issue, sorted out in minutes and Internet was up and running
- Checked Devices panel for Devices errors or issues: System reports that my CPU (?!wtf) has missing drivers, when I chose to check for updated ones it simply say that latest ones are already installed. As computer is running I can't say what that means to the system itself.
- HDMI device is disabled as it cant find relevant audio device to connect (second next thing on my list was to install audio drivers)

OK, now to put the old HDD back in the system:
- Shut down and reconnect old HDD
- Windows cannot boot, same error as on first try
- I rebooted with Acronis Rescue Disc and used "Add new HDD" tool on the old drive (to delete all partitions)
- Rebooted, Windows cannot boot error.
- Went to sleep as it was 3 o'clock in the morning and I had to go to work.

What am I doing wrong. Any help is much appreciated.

Regards

SOLVED!

Finally I managed to solve the problem.
I had to repeat my "Try 2" again and all went well. I would like to ask you, Acronis, to include a warning in your guide that it is not recommended to reconnect the old HDD with windows still populating old drive partition.
Somehow (even while I connected the old drive to a second SATA controller) it messed up in the boot procedure and even though in BIOS this drive was last to be looked at for booting.

Off course, I had to reinstall drivers for CPU (?!!), Audio and LAN. The rest worked like a charm. Procedure for CPU was to go to Device manager and Uninstall each CPU core, reboot, and they came back without a problem.

btw. before that, reading some comments on the forum, I tried first to restore partition without "Universal Restore" option but with "copy disc signature" option enabled. This again resulted in fail to boot.

So to all who are trying to do similar to what I was trying to do: when you are sure your OS can boot properly, only then try to connect an old drive. But immediately (before booting to win) use the Acronis Rescue CD to erase all stuff on that drive. As you already have a copy of the disc (used in restoring process) somewhere safe, the procedure is painless.
