add existing backup to the list

I have been trying to add the existing backups to the list (for some reason they keep vanishing on me) I followed the following steps from the help file:
Adding an existing backup to the list
You may have Acronis True Image backups created by a previous product version or copied from another computer. Every time you start Acronis True Image 2015, it scans your computer for such backups and adds them to the backup list automatically.
If you have backups that are not shown in the list, you can add them manually.
To add backups manually:
In the Backup section, click Add backup, and then click Add existing backup. Program opens a window where you can browse for backups on your computer.
Select a backup version (a .tib file), and then click Add.
The entire backup will be added to the list.
However, after following the steps to add the backup from the external hard drive to the list the entire backup is not being added to the list. I have been trying for almost an hour on a few different backups but they simply are not being added to the list. I am not sure what it is that I am doing incorrectly. Any assistance would be so very much appreciated.

Thanks. Oddly enough when I went to open the program to make a backup this evening - they are all there again. For some reason the backups will be there for awhile and then every once in a while they just aren't showing up. Very odd.
Anyway, they were all there this evening.
However, I have noticed that the drive letter is changing when I plug in my external hard drive to do a backup. There for a while it would show the same drive letter no matter what. But recently the darn drive letter is changing on me so if I want to use a different backup or say open location I get a message saying Cannot find the file or folder. If its located on a removable media or remote storage, then make sure that the storage device is connected, and try again. That is when I realized that the same drive has both the backup from April 30 and the one I just made on it but the drive letter is showing as being different. I realize that this is not an issue with the Acronis Backup, but is there any way to stop this from happening. Since if I want to use a backup to recover my pc and the darn drive letter keeps changing using the backup to just recover the pc is not going to work. I know I can do it another way with the backup up and the bootable media but it would be nice to have the darn drive letter stay the same since I do plug the external hard drive into the same usb port to create the backups.
So I guess that what I am saying is that I have external USB hard drive that I use frequently for backups, but I have recently noticed that every time I plug it in I may get a different drive letter for that drive.
Is there a way to assign a drive letter to the external USB drive so I always get the same drive letter for that drive? Thanks So Very Much

Some basics.
When an external disk does not assume the same drive letter each connect, it is usually because the user has more or less other devices connected. Removing or adding other devices (such as flash drives/cameras/printers) can usually get the external to change or corret its drive letter, if disconnected and reconnected.
1. A specific task will only successfully backup to the target disk (actual disk and same drive letter) as was used when task created.
If you wish to change or make what seems like a change, you can use the Task/operations/move/ option; or create a new task with the correct options.
2. A device needing a drive letter will normally be assigned the next available open drive letter.
Yes, you can use Windows Disk Management and change or assign a specific drive letter to the target disk but the specific drive letter is only applicable to the computer assigning the specific letter. When the external is attached to another computer, the drive letter that will be assigned for that session will be whatever drive letter is next available up for use.
Sometimes, it is necessary to unplug or remove a usb stick or other device which is occupying a drive letter in order to make other drive letters to become available. This reassignment is done in Windows Disk Management./Add-change drive letter.
3. if you wish to assign a new drive letter
a. attach the external
b. open Windows Disk Management
c. RIGHT CLICK on the external disk drive data partition which has the drive letter to be changed.
d. Select the option "Change drive letter and paths"
e. Click change and select the desired drive letter (x or y or z) if available.
f. If your external is unnamed, you can now click on properties of the disk and assign a name (11 char or less)
This name is used to help identify which disk or partitions are involved. It is best that each partition has unique names.
g. Once you have the external configured with the desired drive letter, then
4. either create new tasks pointing to the new drive lettered external disk
or, instead of creating new task, try using the Move option on ONE of your tasks
and point the task to the new the same disk and same exact folder as was used before the drive letter was changed.
When the Move option is completed, the only real change that was made was to have the task look in the same place except the same place has a new drive letter. All the prior tib files for that folder should still be there.
Then run another backup and see if the move worked and the correct number was assigned to the new backup.
If successful, then do the Move on the other tasks.
If not successful, then stop using the old task and create all new tasks pointing to the drive letter .
If new tasks needed, use different task names and different folder names so each new task is new and unique.
c. and choose the option
A. Assign x or y or z, etc as the new drive letter and

Thanks for that absolutely wonderful and thorough explanation. I greatly appreciate it. I will copy and print this out for my future reference and I can't thank you enough for going into such detail for me. Again, Thanks So Very Very Much :)

I thought that I had seen the option the you first suggested
Task > operations > move > option and I know that as soon as you tell me I am going to want to kick myself for not remembering where or how I saw that. But can you please be so kind as to tell me how I get to the task/operations/move/ option to fix that issue with some of the backups.
Thanks Again

In oder for your tasks to appear, you may need to have the target disk be attached so TI can see the tib files.
The function of the move option is allow the user to change the target location from its original setting to some new location.
This move option can be found inside any backup task which has completed a backup and the new storage disk is attached.
When you open TrueImage, all your backup tasks are listed along the left margin under the header "My Backups."
Select/Click on the one which is creating the backup tasks to the wrong drive letter external.
This selected task should appear on your main screen and provide an option labelled "operations" along the bottom margin.
The move option will be listed inside the "operations" option. Be sure the external storage disk is attached before clicking the move option.
Also the move option is not necessary unless you are wanting to make the task point to a different drive letter than was scheduled for on the original task.
