External drive letters change & confuse Acronis & cause me problems

Thread needs solution

I'm running Windows 7 and the latest TrueImage build.

I have 4 internal HD's and 4 external HD's that connect with USB or eSATA connections, 2 USB & 2 eSATA. The external drives are usually left off until I want to do a backup. When I want to do a cbackup and turn the external drive one, sometimes the same drive has a drive path of "H:" and sometimes it's "I:" depending on when I turn the drive on and/or start/restart windows with one or more drive(s) turned on.

I want to direct TrueImage to the correct backup location, which path may now show a different drive letter, and perform the incremental backup. OR change the drive path to what is correct at the time I have turned on the external HD and now want to perform the backup.

TrueImage does not like this. It appears there is little or no flexibility when it comes to "on the fly" adjustments in drive paths for backups. Or in naming the backup. This has caused much wasted time.

My abit IP35 Pro motherboard is fairly old and my JMicron eSATA driver works, but it's not the best, which is why I think I have some less than perfectly stable behavior from my eSATA connected drives. BIOS is set for AHCI mode.

Any helpful comments?

One option would be to

Attach one usb disk and use Windows disk management to assign letter Z to it, and then open TrueImage and edit/use the task/move option and point the task to the correct folder on the new Drive Z so future backups for this usb drive will go the same folder but with a new drive letter Z.

If you have seveal tasks poiinting to the old orignal drive letter,, you will need to repeat the Move edit for each task so all the tasks will point to the correct letter Z for each task to replace the old drive letter.

If you hve a 2nd usb storage disk, insert it and assign letter X or Y. Repeat the move edit so that the tasks which pointed to the old lettrer now point to same original folder but with the new letter X or Y. Repeat this mve edit for any task needing correction ponting to X or Y.

FYI: The new drive letter assignment only works for the computer which performs the letter assgnment. If you have several computers with TrueImage installed, this will only work for the computer doing the actual letter assignment.
When the usb disk is inserted into another computer (other than the one which performed the letter assignment), the drive letter that will be assigned will be whatever Windows drive letter is next in line for normal assignment.

You can make it easier to id the various drives by changing the volume label to something you can recognize. Acronis Disk Director 12 can do this if you cannot find another method.
