To delete previous backup file or not to delete, that is the question

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image Home 2009 installed. I thinks it's tremendous software. The speed alone is a marvel.

Anyway, I've got an incremental backup of my system. I just created a new backup incrementally from my first. I see that the size of the file for this second backup is similar to the original backup file. This would suggest to me that it can standalone, meaning that there's no need to keep the original backup file around.

Is this true?

TIA,
David

Not necessarily. If you did a defrag previous to doing the last inc., that would explain its size. But True Image being the beast it is will need the original full plus ALL incs. to effect a restore from that last inc. You might as well make another new FULL backup, then you can get rid of the previous one if you need the space.

David,
If you have the room, many of us prefer to keep multiple backups for as long as space allows. It is not unusual to not miss a file or folder for a while and if you only have one backup copy, your choices of recovery of a missing(?) or corrupt file is diminished. If space is really an issue for your backup drive, ask Santa for help. You can get a 500G for about $50 or even less.

If you need help in managing your space, try Oracledba's user created Chain2Gen helper program for TrueImage. Link below in signature.

With Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 we encourage users to use our GUI in order to manage backups as long as it gives enough functionality. The reason of doing this way is that the GUI will prevent any unwanted operation, like deleting full backup file and keeping incremental backup (which obviously cannot be restored alone).
It can also perform consolidation if you don’t want to have to backups by merging incremental with full.

The 2015 version of Acronis has many short comings including the ability to delete older backups using the GUI.

If there is a way to do this in 2015 it is hidden.

In general I have several issues (sorry to be off topic but in reality it is cogent here).

1. The 2014 had a poor but better UI especially with the loss of GUI based backup management - an essential feature

2. 2015 log reports come by email notifications but cannot find a way to get them via the GUI

I am also having the same problem with Acronis 2014. When I bring up the Backup function in the GUI which I assume is the control panel I receive a list of Backups that I want to delete. If I say DELETE, my PC hangs and I can only get out of Acronis through a shutdown in the task Manager. I tried deleting the backups from my Harddrive but the same thing happens when I go back into the control panel. The circle goes round and round and freezes my PC. Can anyone help?

Good Afternoon: I set up my system doing a FULL BACK UP and then Incremental Backups . I then do a FULL BACKUP after every 10 incrementals. Can I delete the older backups(FULL plus 10) once I have done an additional FULL BACKUP.
Thank you
RPS

Yes you can do that within True Image. Exactly how depends on which version you have. Do not do it manually. See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/45927.

My preference would be to stop using the existing task and create a new task and set the new task to automatic cleanlup as illustrated by the link provided by user Thomasjk above and a similar link below. The advantage of both is that they system does the deletion automatically without the user getting involved. Note scheme is described as "custom" which is the selection you need to choose as well.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Thanks--If I just edit and save the task parameters from:
Create a Full Version after full backup every 6 incrementals and Store no more than 6 Version chains
TO
Create a full backup every 4 incrementals and Store no more than 4 Version Chains--and then save the new changes, will Acronis True Image 2014 simply follow that command--or should I delete the whole task and start all over again with new settings?

Thanks in advance
So far every thing is Ok but I'm saving to an external 1T drive that is beginning to fill up because I think I was saving too many Version Chains.
