Clone or use Build

Thread needs solution

Hello.
I'm using True Image 2015 build 6613. I have a HP dv5 1235dx laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I want to install a SSD from old HD. I have 2 computers the notebook and a desktop both running same Windows. Desktop has very little on it and laptop is daily home use. Can I copy Win7 from desktop (cleaner version) onto new SSD and then put into laptop? Do I clone are use a media build. They are both OEM and can't get a product key for clean install with a recovery disk. Afterwards I was planning on downloading Windows 10 for free. I'm a novice at best with repairs I have done desktops but not laptops. I have Passport Ultra but not feeling safe with it. I'm disabled and use laptop always as I sit in chair for back injury most of the day. Any advice would be Greatly Appreciated. I might have to buy True Image for Desktop or call for permission to change there.

Thank You, John

You can do an entire PC backup of your desktop machine and restore it to a disk on the laptop, but then you have to use Universal Restore before rebooting the laptop. This is not a super easy process, but it works well most of the time. Put another way, it is the best thing to try short of reinstalling Windows from Scratch.

This is a bit tricky because for Microsoft you are running the same copy of Windows on 2 computers. But since your laptop was already running Windows 7, you might be able to get through the activation, maybe automatically, possibly after calling Microsoft support.
