ATIH has changed my external HDD letter!

Thread needs solution

I have the trial version and it successfully perfomed the first backup.
Now when I try to carry out the incremental backup ATIH tells me that it can't locate my 'N' disk but insists on looking for an 'O' disk.
Any ideas please.
TIA
Chris

Suggest your restart with a new task.

Step 1 would be to use the Windows Disk Management and change the drive letter of your external to a drive letter such as x or y or z.
This would provide a staple and consistent drive letter for your backups. When you use the automatic assignment, any insertion of a camera or flash drive or other usb device will cause the external drive letter to be another letter higher. So assigning a letter such as x or y or will reduce the chances of an automatic drive letter change. This is a windows issue--not related to TrueImage.

Thanks, GroverH, for the helpful suggestion.

I was a bit puzzled by the incident as my WD external HDD is permanently connected and active and, in my ignorance, I did not expect Windows (XP in my case atm) to change its letter.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled ATIH 2012 and changed the HDD identity to 'Z' as I don't anticipate connecting twenty other devices to my PC!

This has worked perfectly, thanks, and I am very grateful for your help. 8-)

Same issue in 2015. Although we KNOW Windows behavior, which is not doing anything wrong, when TRUE IMAGE was written, it should account for the environment it is in not have us jump through hoops to deal with lack of judgement in the matter. When you create a backup set, you choose the destination. Thus the path is in the configuration. In the same way it is in the configuration, we should be able to EDIT the configuration. I had numerous versions of TRUE IMAGE over the years and I do know at some point, it was easily changed. Now I have DI 2015 (bought like a few days before 2016 came out as I got Windows 10 and received emails to buy 2015 to support 10, then they come out with 2016. ) I am tiring of them doing this over the years to be honest. So if I am told 2016 solves the problem, I am NOT going to upgrade once again. So I cannot see how to edit the path, and I am not going to play around with my drive letters because of their lack of common sense. I do not know what happened in my case but the external drive became F and my internal CD became G when I first made the backup. After that it went back to normal. Now I could not continue to use the backup set because I cannot edit the F to G. So if anyone can tell me how to EDIT a backup set path drive letter, which is really the common sense solution to this please let me know,

Andrew,
The Task Edit "MOVE" OPTION will enable you to tell the program where the backuop is to be stored.
Browse the path and point to the actual physical location of where the tib file is now and that will change the program to where the file is now.

The user can be pro-active to prevent such from occurring. When starting out with a new storage disk, use disk management to pre-assign specific drive letters to the storage disk. Letters such as x or y or z are good.
Afterwards, create the task and have the destination be the newly assigned letters. Then the insertion or removal of a flash drive, camera, etc will have no effect on the drive letter assigned to the storage disk.

Even now, you could pre-assign special letters to the target disk and then use the TrueImage task MOVE option to point to their new letters.

I did see move and I read the description and actually attempted to use it, then chickened out afraid I'd screw something up. I will give it try. Being able to do this is quite important. For example my printer has a multimedia port that maps to a drive letter. So turning the printer on or off or disconnecting it will screw up the drive letter of the external drive when I connect it. That is what I finally did find was the cause of the drive letter problem. I did not have the printer connected for my first backup which I made of a clean Win 10 upgrade. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE. I CAN"T WAIT TO TRY IT.
