ATI 2016 Cloud Upload Performance

Thread needs solution

All,

I've just upgraded to ATI '16 and have been pleased with the software since '14. This time, I decided to give the Cloud version a try as I now have Google Fiber with a clean 1000/1000 Mbps bandwidth footprint. Frankly, I wouldn't mind getting rid of my NAS and using the cloud exclusively.

I understand that the initial backup will take longer than the followups. I also understand that peering could limit my ability to upload at the maximum speeds possible. But, for the record, running a speed test from Kansas City (my location) to St. Louis (were I understand my data center should be,) normally results in very high speeds (IE, 800/800ish.) I have not yet run full traces to find a possible bottleneck.

However, I'm very disappointed so far to learn my uploads... are taking forever. My current uploads are running around 20 Mbps (fluctuating wildly.) Yes, this isn't "slow," but the idea of not utilizing even close to half of my bandwidth is completely frustrating.

I contacted support yesterday and explained my situation; provided screenshots etc. I was told that this is "normal" speeds for the service. I would like to know if this is correct for everyone who may have a connection close to mine.

Note that I currently have the following options enabled to help with speed: Performance-->Operation Priority: High. Data upload speed: Maximum. My PC is based on a forth generation i7 with 16GB of RAM. I do not believe my I/O would be a bottleneck.

I'm currently uploading a 1.5TB drive and have a 3 TB drive backup behind it.

Anyway, I'm wondering if this is truly normal and if I can expect performance to improve. If it is, It may be more beneficial for us to stay with the non-cloud version or stick with 2015 and use an external cloud service.

Thanks for any feedback!

I forgot to mention that I also noticed the upload was "frozen" this morning. Meaning, the software was functioning, but my upload wasn't moving at all. Pausing and re-starting corrected that minor, but annoying, issue.

I believe your upload speed of 20Mbps to be an inherent limitation of the application. There have been numerous complaints about slow upload speed to the cloud. I believe this limitation is inherent due to the methodology used by the application of creating a backup archive file while at the same time uploading that file to the cloud.

I personally think that the user would be much better served by allowing for the upload of already created local backup archive files so that the backup file creation process is not in the way.

You should try this test, create a folder backup of some good size say 10GB or so and select a local target location. Once that completes, choose the archive feature and select this test backup as the source data for archive to the cloud. See what your results are. If possible to turn off compression on this task do so. Report your results back here. If the result is better usage of your available bandwidth use the in app feedback feature to let the development team know that. The feedback feature can be found in the Help section of the GUI (open book icon). The more request/complaints registered in this way the more attention will be given to an issue.

I also encourage others reading this post to do the same.

Thank you very much for the comment! I will try then once time permits.

Interestingly, my speeds are better today (although still much lower than capable on the bandwidth side.) I'm hitting a more consistent 50 Mbps this morning. Perhaps a fluke; perhaps some magical switch was turned on; perhaps peering has improved today...

I have a 100/100 Mbps connection and i have had upload speed up to 98 Mbps. It was not @ 98 Mbps all the time and i do also see the upload speeds fluctuating wildly. The upload speed are very different depending on what day and what time of the day it is. Weekends are slow.

When uploading a 12GB .tib that was first backed up locally to an SSD, unfortunately, my speeds seem to be the same. I did forget to turn off compression (or at least check if it was on,) so I'll follow up with that shortly. I used WireShark to pull what I think is my Data Center's IP:

Rackspace Hosting RSPC-NET-4 (NET-69-20-0-0-1) 69.20.0.0 - 69.20.127.255
Acronis Inc RACKS-8-1395817095442973 (NET-69-20-59-64-1) 69.20.59.64 - 69.20.59.127

(I'm def no expert in IP so I could have the above wrong.)

Trace routs to this IP are fairly decent at 13 hops under 35ish ms.

At this point, I still don't know what I want to do...  If anyone knows of an unlimited cloud backup service that really can make proper use of Gigabit ISP's, I'd gladly give some alternatives a try (after saving local backups.)  Feel free to PM me.

I'll tinker around a little more... but gosh, at this point, I'm very disappointed!

I'm just posting a quick update...

I'm still not able to utilize the bandwidth that I have available. My latest grief is that I've confirmed that I'm being routed all the way to Boston instead of St. Louis. Support claims I can choose the location of my data center - and I can... to an extent - but I can't choose the actual location within the country. IE, per https://kb.acronis.com/content/4350, I should be able to pick Boston (US2) or St.Louis (US1.) I can not choose. Obliviously, as I live near SL, I would like to test that location.

Also, when I log into my Acronis account/dashboard, I'm hitting what appears to be another possible US location: US4

Support is pretty lacking and I've requested to be escalated to a higher support level, if possible. I'm still open to an alternative, but I'd really prefer to stick with Acronis if I can work out the kinks.

After support had manually moved my location to St Louis, I've requested a refund as performance was even worse.  I didn't bother to test out the hops or anything...

Don't get me wrong:  I'm perfectly happy with ATI 2015.  But the 2016 Cloud solution isn't worth the premium in price for what I have available to me.

For others disappointed in the ATI cloud solution, as a curtesy, this is what I'd done:

  • I signed up for Amazon's free three-month trial for Cloud Drive "Unlimited Everything."  This allows backups for all files; not just photos and video the Unlimited Photos version does.
  • I installed Odrive and linked my Amazon Cloud Drive.
  • I installed and configured ATI 2015 to drop my TIB into my Cloud Drive “Odrive.”
  • Once ATI finishes an image backup for a drive, Odrive automatically syncs the files into Cloud Drive (with basically zero effort.)
  • NAS is on ebay (PM if you’re interested ;) )

The best part of this extremely simple solution?  The uploads of my TIB's are hitting around 300 Mbps.

This folks, is what works.  What would have taken days and days for the inital backup with ATI 2016 Cloud, is already finished.  Period.
