Full backup - Failed to open...make sure backup location is accessible
I am doing various application updates to my Windows 10 system, and along the way, I'm making an occasional full backup of my system.
I select "New backup", give it a unique name, and make the following selections:
- Do not schedule
- Custom scheme - Full backup with Auomatic cleanup OFF
When the destination is a drive that already has another full backup (TIB file), Acronis will perform the backup but when it's done, it gives this error:
"Failed to open backup <<puts path/filename>>.tib. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. The backup my also be corrupted.
Click Retry to try to read from the same location. To create a new version according to the current backup scheme, click Ignore."
The file is on the destination disk. I can open it with File Explorer and see the contents, yet it fail "validation" by Acronis.
"The last backup failed. We will rerun the backup at x:xx AM. The specified file does not exist: D:\Path name\cdp.metadata"
However, if I create a backup with the steps I outline above and select a destination drive that doesn't have any pervious backups (TIB files), the backup operation is successfull. So I now have one backup my local drive, another on one external drive, and yet another on another external drive. When used Acronis to "move" the TIB file from my local drive to one of the external drives, the operation completed, but then the file doesn't "Validate" anymore.
What am I doing wrong? Why can't I have multiple separate and unrelated full backup files on the same destination drive?

Thanks for the reply. I am explicitly selecting "full" as the backup type, so if Acronis is treating it as "incremental" then that's a bug.
I did experiment this morning with putting each backup in a unique folder. That's seems to have resolved the problem.

Helen,
I also make sure to put each backup in it's own folder to avoid an cross-reference of backups in the database that may be inerpretting another backup as being part of the same set (just in case).
There have been other posts where people attempt to validate within Windows and get similar errors, but can then successfully validate wiht the acronis officline bootable media - perhaps double check with that and see what the outcome is. It could be a bug, or it may suggest your install is not quite right if it does validate offline, but not from within Windows.
Was this an upgrade to Acronis from a pervious version? Or, did you have Acronis installed and upgrade the OS at anytime? If so, you may want to run the Acronis cleanup tool in my signature, reboot and install again "Fresh" by ensureing that you run the installer by right clicking and "run as administrator" - even if logged in with an admin account. This will remove all instances of Acronis on the system and hopefully and leftovers from previous installs (or perhaps a bad install) and most likely prevent this behavior from occurring again. It's important to run the clean tool instead of just removing from Control panel though and to use the "run as administrator" option when installing the software to make sure it has the highest access rights possible.
