When stupid things Happen... -> Partition Recovery to the wrong partition, any chance to get my data back?

Thread needs solution

Dear users,
Usually when I have a vista or a Win7 installation I decide to move all my user folder to my second partition so when I have problems with the OS I just recover the original installation from Acronis. So during that process I (I take the blame :P) restored my partition to the wrong partition (ex. 1 Partition for the OS - 40gb, and 1 for the user files-storage - 420, plus one more for the acronis secure zone so imagine restoring the partition from acronis secure zone to the 420gb partition instead of the 40gb)... Is there any chance I can get my files back? Software or anything else? I tried GetDataBackNTFS but I didn't have a positive result... So... any suggestions? I would appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance!

Does your original image contain both partitions, or do you have images of the original partitions still?

No my original image contains the OS contents...
I installed the OS with all the progz I wanted, pointed all my folder savings to the 2nd partition so when I have problems I can restore the OS and keep the contents the way they are untouched... Just immagine restoring to the wrong partition... Now I have the contents of the OS in both partitions and lost my data! The point is that acronis erased the data partition and put there my OS contents, my question is if there is a way to recover my data (like a recovery software but which one coz I don't want to spend lots of time and/or money for that process unless I'm sure that it can be done), or I really lost them...

Thanks in advance!

Thanos,

Because TI deleted the contents of your second partition the data is destroyed. With special tools it might be possible to get bits of it back, but they will be expensive as will taking the disk to a specialist data recovery place.

Whilst it is too late now, if you haven't already, it is wise to give all your partitions meaningful labels, as this makes it less likely to make mistakes.

You are absolutely positive that in the Secure Zone you don't have any image of your data partition?

There is also a problem with storing a copy of your partition on the same drive. If the drive dies, you'll have lost all your images + all your partitions. If you have access to either a second drive or preferably an external one, your images would be much safer. Also don't forget that as you are using Windows 7, you can convert your images into Windows VDH format and Windows can boot from those files.

Thanks Colin!

Next time the images are going to be saved on DVDs or on a server, plus the storage will be on the network and not locally (that's safer for my clients too!)
Thank you for your time answering my question!
