TI Home 2010, Rescue Media, Online Backup, Bare Metal restore

Thread needs solution

My nephew is off to college as a freshman in a few weeks. Like all 18 y.o. he thinks he and his laptop are indestructible. I am considering using TI 2010 Home do to an automated weekly backup. I definitely like the back to the cloud idea. I am just wondering, if I create him a rescue DVD, will I be able to do a bare metal restore from the cloud?

Thanks

Marc

The rescue environment can access FTP and local networks.

When you say 'the cloud' are you thinking of Acronis Online backup?

I think the better option is to make a bootable USB stick image of the laptop (assuming an image would fit) or a laptop external drive.

Use the above to reinstall the OS and then use the 'cloud' backup to restore documents etc.

Colin:

Yes, the cloud is the Acronis online backup. As you suggest, I think I will be better off making a bootable CD/DVD image with an external drive. Plus making a complete bootable back to DVDs (for when he loses the boot CD or the external HD).

Now I just need to figure out if I should use the Acronis online backup , or some other cloud service like Mobile Me, Mozy, JungleDisk, etc.

Thanks for your input.

One word of warning, if the image doesn't fit on just one or two DVD's, then either your nephew will develop strong wrists or win a medal in headbutting due to frustration, as the amount of times the DVD's will need to be swapped will drive him crazy.

It isn't a 1-> .2 -> 3-> etc , but 3,1,2,3,1,3,2, or similar.
