Attempting To Recover From Backup

Thread needs solution

My computer has started giving me trouble, and I would like to recover/restore to a True Image Backup that I created a couple of months ago (the backup is valid).  The backup is on a USB drive, and I am attempting to recover to the primary partition on my laptop computer.  As soon as I start the process by clicking on the 'recover' button, I am prompted to restart my computer.  Upon restarting (and after a few minutes of startup/processing), I get the error shown in the attached image.

Any ideas on how I can get the recovery process to complete successfully?

Thanks!

awluter, welcome to these user forums.

The message suggests that the Linux boot OS environment is not detecting or doesn't have the necessary device drivers for your USB backup drive, hence cannot find the backup .TIB file that you are trying to recover.

What version / build of Acronis True Image are you using here?

The recommended method of restoring is to start the computer from the Acronis bootable Rescue Media created on CD or USB stick, or to use the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (F11 prompt) if you have this activated.

How is the USB drive being connected - is this connecting directly to a USB port on your computer, or are you connecting to it via a USB hub - if a hub, is it a powered hub?

Thanks for the response.  I am using build 4514.

The USB drive is connected directly to the computer.  I'll see about starting the computer from the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to restore.

Thanks for the update but which Acronis product is your build 4514 for?  I do not recognise it and it isn't the latest build for any of the more recent products?

Acronis True Image 2017 build 5534 version 20
Acronis True Image 2016 build 6571 version 19
Acronis True Image 2015 build 6613 version 18
Acronis True Image 2014 build 6688 version 17
Acronis True Image 2013 build 6514 version 16
Acronis True Image 2012 build 7133 version 15
Acronis True Image 2011 build 6942 version 14
Acronis True Image 2010 build 7160 version 13
Acronis True Image 2009 build 9809 version 12
Acronis True Image 11 build 8101
Acronis True Image 10 build 4942
Acronis True Image 9 build 3854

Thank you for that image, it shows that you have the OEM version of ATIH 2014 but a very old build which is typical of these OEM products.

I would still recommend building the Acronis bootable Rescue Media unless you have already done so & tried booting from it? See the ATIH 2014 User Guide: Creating bootable rescue media for how to do this, check the section: Making sure that your rescue media can be used when needed and in particular where it states:

To test the rescue media

If you use external drives for storing your backups, you must attach the drives before booting from the rescue CD. Otherwise, the program might not detect them.

  1. Configure your computer to enable booting from the rescue media. Then, make your rescue media device (CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive or USB stick) the first boot device. See Arranging boot order in BIOS.
  2. If you have a rescue CD, press any key to start booting from the CD, when you see the prompt "Press any key to boot from CD". If you do not press a key within five seconds, you will need to restart the computer.
  3. After the boot menu appears, choose True Image.

If you still cannot see your USB external disk drive, then life becomes a little harder as you will not be able to build the WindowsPE version of Rescue Media with your OEM version of ATIH 2014.

At this point, if you have more than one partition on your laptop drive, and assuming you have the space, I would recommend copying the backup file to a second partition (not the OS partition that you want to restore to), or else find an older external drive you can connect that the boot media will recognise.

The only other alternative would be to download a trial copy of a later version of Acronis True Image and use that to recover your .TIB backup file.
